Being a fan of Basquiat's art and finding his life to be fascinating, I loved this book about his relationship with Suzanne Mallouk, written by her close friend. Short easy chapters written in a poetic style, mixed with stories told by Suzanne herself. I'm also drawn to stories from NYC in the 70's & 80's... ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I have tagged widow basquiat as the lead because it was such a unique piece of writing, part memoir/fictional account of a life which had me looking at the art on line and longing to spend a day wandering the streets of New York after a visit to MOMA.

A wonderful evocation of a life and a unique time and place. A memoir + retelling of the story of Suzanne Mallouk, Jean Michel Basquiat's lover and muse, in short fragments.It is sad, honest, and a fascinating picture of the creation of art and torment of the artist. If I had a time machine I would love to go to New York in the 70/80's, pop to cbgb's, meet Debbie, Lou, and Andy, and if I cd grab a beer mat signed by Jean michel Basquiat!!

An impressive pick for my museum book club! I absolutely loved the vignette-style approach to telling the story of Suzanne, Basquiat‘s muse and lover. Clement‘s prose is poetic and superbly evocative and vivid with so few words. Just gorgeous.

Clement captures the life and times of Suzanne and Jean-Michel in a way that can only be achieved by someone who was there with them. The prose- both Clement‘s herself and Suzanne‘s own words, often found at the end of a chapter- is deeply arresting and almost impossibly beautiful. It‘s a quick, satisfying read and I highly recommend it.

An interesting and at times upsetting look into the turbulent relationship between Basquiat and Suzanne. I loved the way Clements interspersed her sparse prose with Suzanne's first person accounts. The writing style seemed to mimic the relationship and made for a quick but heavy read.

I saw this painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat at New York's Museum of Modern Art and it reminded me that I loved this book by Jennifer Clement, Widow Basquiat; the beautiful story of the life of his lover Suzanne Mallouk.
