Pickpick

Being a fan of Basquiat's art and finding his life to be fascinating, I loved this book about his relationship with Suzanne Mallouk, written by her close friend. Short easy chapters written in a poetic style, mixed with stories told by Suzanne herself. I'm also drawn to stories from NYC in the 70's & 80's... ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Life Does Not Frighten Me | Maya Angelou, Stewart, Tabori & Chang

Shadows on the wall
Noises down the hall
Life doesn't frighten me at all

Bad dogs barking loud
Big ghosts in a cloud
Life doesn't frighten me at all

Life doesn't frighten me | Maya Angelou, Jean Michel Basquiat, Sara Jane Boyers

This poem is a celebration of bravery in the face of adversity. Maya Angelou is an amazing writer and her use of repetition helps readers connect and feel the poem. This poem can help children overcome their fears by understanding that nothing will scare them. It can help them face their fears in real life.

This poem shows resilience and courage. The poem empowers the reader to face life's challenges without fear. There‘s vivid imagery and repetition that creates an amazing sense of strength, making it clear that various aspects of life, such as shadows, loneliness, and even wild animals, are not something to be fearful of.

“Life doesn't frighten me at all. No, they don't frighten me at all. They don't frighten me at all. It's only in my dreams.“

I think this collection of poems would be great in a middle-elementary classroom. As students get older and experience the challenges that come with life these poems can transport them into world where they can see how others are also going through difficult times but end up making it out. I would recommend this book as it is supportive and has a sense of creativity.

This collection of poems is written by the iconic Maya Angelou and is accompanied by illustrations from the works of Jean-Michael Basquiat. Angelou uses evocative words that are emphasized by the illustrations and make them easy to read and a want to continue to read. The poems connect to the reader as they encompass the challenges of life and how you can overcome them.

#My5stars2021 Thank you @Tove_Reads for tagging me in this challenge. I have put my 5* reassure together although in hindsight some of my 4* reads linger in the memory.
I have tagged widow basquiat as the lead because it was such a unique piece of writing, part memoir/fictional account of a life which had me looking at the art on line and longing to spend a day wandering the streets of New York after a visit to MOMA.

Cathythoughts Shuggie would definitely be one of my top books too 👍 (edited) 3y

A wonderful evocation of a life and a unique time and place. A memoir + retelling of the story of Suzanne Mallouk, Jean Michel Basquiat's lover and muse, in short fragments. It is sad, honest, and a fascinating picture of the creation of art and torment of the artist. If I had a time machine I would love to go to New York in the 70/80's, pop to cbgb's, meet Debbie, Lou, and Andy, and if I cd grab a beer mat signed by Jean michel Basquiat!!

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻😁 3y
