Outlive
Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity | Peter Attia, MD
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A groundbreaking manifesto on living better and longer that challenges the conventional medical thinking on aging and reveals a new approach to preventing chronic disease and extending long-term health, from a visionary physician and leading longevity expert One of the most important books youll ever read.Steven D. Levitt, New York Times bestselling author of Freakonomics Wouldnt you like to live longer? And better? In this operating manual for longevity, Dr. Peter Attia draws on the latest science to deliver innovative nutritional interventions, techniques for optimizing exercise and sleep, and tools for addressing emotional and mental health. For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of aging that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimers disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late to help, prolonging lifespan at the expense of healthspan, or quality of life. Dr. Attia believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalized, proactive strategy for longevity, one where we take action now, rather than waiting. This is not biohacking, its science: a well-founded strategic and tactical approach to extending lifespan while also improving our physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Dr. Attias aim is less to tell you what to do and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health, in order to create the best plan for you as an individual. In Outlive, readers will discover: Why the cholesterol test at your annual physical doesnt tell you enough about your actual risk of dying from a heart attack. That you may already suffer from an extremely common yet underdiagnosed liver condition that could be a precursor to the chronic diseases of aging. Why exercise is the most potent pro-longevity drugand how to begin training for the Centenarian Decathlon. Why you should forget about diets, and focus instead on nutritional biochemistry, using technology and data to personalize your eating pattern. Why striving for physical health and longevity, but ignoring emotional health, could be the ultimate curse of all. Aging and longevity are far more malleable than we think; our fate is not set in stone. With the right roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

Want to live a better and longer life? Part 1 is very technical —lots of medical jargon and acronyms making this a challenging read. I just accepted what the author wrote was serious. Once he gets into the recommendations about how to live longer, it‘s full of convincing anecdotes. I‘m not young enough for this book but some anecdotes are applicable—something is better than nothing. So if you need convincing, this book is a good reminder to ⬇️

Texreader Exercise and lose weight. He does offer a lot of specifics, but some are medical-related and out of reach for most of us. 3mo
GingerAntics This is in my library and I‘ve been wavering on it. 3mo
Texreader @GingerAntics I only give it 3 stars. Mainly because so much of it is medical jargon that is meaningless to me and impossible to retain 3mo
GingerAntics @Texreader eh, not what I was hoping for. 3mo

Book focuses on prevention of disease and building the capabilities to live longer and more healthy. Sections on exercise (cardio, strength, stability), nutrition, sleep, and emotional health include a ton of science, balanced with common sense and stories from the author's life. A very readable, usable, summary of what we believe about how to live a longer, healthier life. Strong recommend for middle aged folks starting to feel old. Fix it now!

I‘ve listened to this and now I‘d like to read the book so on to the Amazon Book Wishlist it goes!

There‘s a change in thinking here so I‘d like to read and annotate! Some things I do … some I don‘t because I didn‘t realize they were important. I‘m intrigued!

Guess I‘m going to try 90 minutes of exercise a week.

I agree with a lot of his points, the information is readable and motivating, and connects many aspects of improving your healthspan. It‘s heavy on the author‘s personal experiences and anecdotes, which started to get off putting. Spoiler alert: exercise- cardio, strength, stability is the best strategy of staving off effects of aging.

Though it‘s a 17 hour long audiobook, this nonfiction book on longevity and how to live optimally was a quick read! The book covers the “four horsemen”, the diseases (and related issues) which are most responsible for death: 1. Heart disease 2. Cancer 3. Diabetes 4. Dementia/Alzheimer‘s. Atria goes into ways “Medicine 3.0” can help cure these, basically prevention and early detection for all. Then the book goes into how to live longer: exercise.

Meshell1313 Nice!! Did you watch his TV show with Chris Hemsworth?? It puts all these ideas to the test on him! 1y
Chelsea.Poole @Meshell1313 no! I will look that up. Chris Hemsworth is fun to look at! 1y

After watching his series with Chris Hemsworth, I become totally interested in Attia‘s ideas about longevity. He has tons of podcasts but I knew I had to read his just released book. He explains these very scientific things in such a digestible way and reading this is making me want to give up all sugar and junk food and just go out an exercise. (Let‘s see how long that feeling lasts.) He focuses on how to improve your life now for a better future

Meshell1313 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars! 2y
