Philosophy in the Islamic World: A Very Short Introduction
Philosophy in the Islamic World: A Very Short Introduction | Peter Adamson
36 posts | 2 read | 1 reading
In the history of philosophy, few topics are so relevant to today's cultural and political landscape as philosophy in the Islamic world. Yet, this remains one of the lesser-known philosophical traditions. In this Very Short Introduction, Peter Adamson explores the history of philosophy among Muslims, Jews, and Christians living in Islamic lands, from its historical background to thinkers in the twentieth century. Introducing the main philosophical themes of the Islamic world, Adamson integrates ideas from the Islamic and Abrahamic faiths to consider the broad philosophical questions that continue to invite debate: What is the relationship between reason and religious belief? What is the possibility of proving God's existence? What is the nature of knowledge? Drawing on the most recent research in the field, this book challenges the assumption of the cultural decline of philosophy and science in the Islamic world by demonstrating its rich heritage and overlap with other faiths and philosophies.

TheBookHippie I think by us reading this or these we are reading what is without the extremist views, mostly and I think it is really smart to do. I think we have pre conceived notions about all people and religions and when reading we see there is not much different in any religion and also how far extremist take it...if that makes sense..... 13mo

TheBookHippie The Prophet (SAAS) says: 'Women are the (equal) sisters of men'. Women make up half of society and they are responsible for the nurturing, guidance and reformation of the subsequent generations of men and women. It is the female who imbues principles and faith into the souls of the nation.
I remember reading this and thinking how close it is to Judaism and how far it is from Christianity .........

This was my understanding before reading this

TheBookHippie Necessity for some, not for others. I've no answer for this other than for some people apparently this is their whole life. I do not have any respect for people who live what they perceive as good for a good eternity. Necessary- not truly, do we hope for it- some do. Do I hope to roam the comos or the other side with Mr Book Hippie- yes. 14mo

TheBookHippie I think the or a Divine is necessary for some and not for others. I loathe that the perceived poor are preyed upon for you need Jesus trope to get Christian‘s crowns in their Heaven place. Personally the mystery of the Divine works for me. A god with rules and scare tactics- nope.. what is god is a better thought. Certainly not what Christian‘s in their rules and box portray him to be. My faith and beliefs are at a comfortable place now but ⬇️ 14mo
TheBookHippie I sure did wrestle it out and get indoctrinated otherwise .. 😵‍💫 14mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie same… it‘s really hard to separate what we‘ve been taught vs what we actually believe. 14mo
Ericalambbrown I feel like man created god. From a strictly evolutionary sense, it makes sense. Humans are hardwired to recognize patterns, try to create order, etc. The idea of a deity delivering explanation for things early people didn‘t understand and mandates to keep the tribe together is very useful for a group trying to bring about the next generation. The idea of an authoritarian deity is a useful tool and makes sense evolutionarily. (edited) 14mo
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown I definitely the modern, mainstream views of god are definitely as you described. Evolutionarily, it was how groups/tribes kept going and managed to thrive over time. I definitely think there is a minority of people trying to shift back to before that mentality, but of course it‘s only a modern approximation. 14mo

TheBookHippie I was wrestling with this and is knowledge like truth? Theirs yours others and the truth(s) somewhere in it is the absolute. Is the Divine absolute truth and knowledge and we have but a fraction ? I think knowledge in general is different from your personal knowledge 🤷🏻‍♀️ but you need both and the ability to gain more. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 14mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie totally agree… I also think that if you could somehow gather the knowledge of every single person on earth, past, present, and future, you probably could create a tome that would be the entirety of all knowable knowledge… but of course that‘s impossible. 14mo

TheBookHippie Personally I think it‘s all mystery. Those who are certain about the divine or god are certainly incorrect . I don‘t think it‘s possible, which is a comfort. People who are certain have so much fear. I find that telling. 1y
ravenlee Doesn‘t it seem like hubris to claim that a mere mortal can know all the secrets of the divine? Anybody who claims to have all the answers is probably selling something. (edited) 1y

TheBookHippie @ravenlee 💯💯💯 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee so true! They want your money one way or the other. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that is always so odd to me. The people with the most certainty are always the most fearful, while those who are able to rest in the mystery of the divine are not afraid at all, just curious. It certainly explains why those who think they have all the answers are terrified of knowledge. 1y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Yup. Boggles the mind. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it really does! Even from my own experience, I thought I could find all the answers within religious texts and the whole time I was wondering if I was getting it wrong, if I was missing something, why would god make people a specific way and then call that way wrong? I was just so filled with questions and doubts and contradictions between all the “answers.” As soon as I let go of the idea of having answers, all of that calmed. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie there is a peace in admitting you don‘t have answers and will never have answers. There is a peace in being open to the divine where you are and in the things you love instead of designated places and events. It changes everything and nothing, all at once. 1y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Exactly. It‘s a peace at last. 1y

ravenlee Interesting - the book I‘ve been tagging all week is about the science of uncertainty (which, for the most part, seems to be largely about probability and statistics and contains a LOT of math that I don‘t understand). In a philosophical sense, the people who are the most certain in their beliefs tend to be the ones written into history as either martyrs or fools. 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee I will definitely agree with that. Martyrs and fools seem to be the only people who are certain. 1y
TheBookHippie Certain that I‘ll never know everything 🙃 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I feel like that is the only true certainty. The snake oil salesmen who want to sell certainty of the lord or whatever, don‘t have anything to sell by fear and suffering. The only real certainty is that the only certainty you can ever have is that you will never have all the answers. 1y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics that and that no one else does either! 1y

ravenlee Is this a “should” or a real-world question? Because ideally, all people should possess and seek knowledge, but in reality most people seem to hide from it, burrowing into the sand and sticking fingers in ears. Knowledge, after all, might threaten their carefully-constructed fantasies. 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee I guess a little of both. It‘s more about your belief on the matter, but it‘s definitely something I think the majority of the group is going to disagree about with the loudest voices right now. 1y
TheBookHippie I think seeking knowledge should be possessed by everyone in the fluid sense of the word. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I agree with that. I think that is the natural state of the human mind, honestly. Why else would these high control religious groups and Christo-fascists be so hell bent on stopping curiosity and actual knowledge? 1y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics you can‘t control that so the only way is to not allow knowledge of any kind. It‘s why they ban books and the first people silenced are artist -writers -poets -musicians… 1y

ravenlee Listen to other (non-hysterical) viewpoints, be open to dialogue, be willing to change your mind when evidence supports it. Seek out differing ideas and traditions. Read! 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee I think the most important one of these is being “willing to change your mind when evidence supports it.” So many people aren‘t open to doing that at all, and they‘re not afraid or ashamed to admit it. They call it faith and conviction. Reality makes it wilful ignorance. 1y
TheBookHippie Open mind, ability to question, ability to accept change, ability to learn a new way. Ability to accept there may be no answer. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie questions are not sacrilege, questions are the only path to the everything beyond the self! 1y

ravenlee That sounds totalitarian to me. If we look back to all those religious schisms over what is orthodox and what is heresy, and in the scientific world we‘ve seen scientists lambasted for ideas that turn out, ages later, to be true (I‘m thinking about the scientists who posited continental shift and Pangaea, for instance)…it just seems that those who try to claim a monopoly on truth or knowledge tend to turn off their ears and brains and 👇🏻 (edited) 1y
ravenlee (cont) double down on their own versions in spite of evidence to the contrary. 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee precisely… which ties in well with the next question. I do think it‘s very totalitarian and fascist to claim only one thing is knowledge and that everything must be understood from one point of view. 1y

kspenmoll No! Sorry, responding without reading. Still recovering from my surgery.9/7. 1y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll 🧡🧡🧡 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I think that‘s the best way to put it. Because today‘s knowledge will be supplanted by tomorrow‘s knowledge, it‘s hard to say that knowledge is this or must be recognised in this way or can only come from this place. It‘s constantly changing, so the answer to this (other than a steadfast no) would be different every day anyway… which basically makes the answer no. 1y

ravenlee I encountered this period of openness, coexistence, and shared knowledge when kiddo and I studied medieval history four years ago (we‘re studying it again this year). I was shocked. I had no idea there was a Muslim court that encouraged immigration and scholarship by Christian and Jewish thinkers. It seems so antithetical to our view of the Islamic world. And, admittedly, it was fairly short-lived and the following years were very reactionary. 1y
ravenlee As far as how harmonious, I would venture to guess that it was about qualified toleration rather than honest coexistence, and that certainly led to the ensuing Reconquista in the Iberian regions. 1y
bnp Not surprised because I've heard of it before. But like #ravenlee, I think that's harmonious with qualifications. I think there were often special taxes Christians and Jews paid while living in Muslim empires. 1y

GingerAntics @ravenlee that is so cool. I can‘t believe this was never discussed in my crusades class in grad school. That was just a lot of war and killing each other (and propaganda writing from both sides). 1y
GingerAntics @bnp that‘s not surprising at all. Hell, christians did the same to Jewish people and Muslims in their empires. 1y
TheBookHippie It was coexistence .. people have forgotten how to do this and instead of looking at other as different they look at them as enemy. Something else entirely. 1y

ravenlee Honestly, I just kind of shake my head at these hotly-debated questions about if a holy text is eternal/infinite/divine then it threatens the divinity/infinitude/eternity of god but if it‘s god‘s word isn‘t it an emanation of his divinity…it‘s all just such tautology to me. 1y
bnp divine in and if itself? No. Inspired by, possibly. But not without human agency in creating/collating a text. 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee @bnp this is what got me at first. I went through these ideas and arrived at a few memes actually. Jesus could come back right now, and today‘s christians, at least here in America, would kill him, lock him up, whatever. They are seriously offended and angry at the idea that Jesus isn‘t a white dude. 🙄 American christians will never say this, but they worship that book above all else, including the real Jesus. 1y

ravenlee I‘ve been learning a lot these last few years about the history I I‘d studied as a kid (hooray for homeschooling!), and I‘m fascinated by the way that during Europe‘s Dark Ages the Islamic world kept learning alive, and how so much of what the Europeans rediscovered or relearned later was only available because Muslim scholars had saved it. 1y
GingerAntics @ravenlee right? It‘s so fascinating that the fact a lot of our knowledge from the humanist period onward was only possible because of the preservation of a people we ignore at best and want to get rid of at worst. People act like the western world is so much more educated, so much smarter, but we literally burned this stuff down. People at the fringes and outside of that system are the ones that preserved it. 1y

TheBookHippie What‘s is fascinating to me is the languages and the multi religious factions. Also side note: when I stated mentoring Muslim children from Pakistan if I would say a Yiddish phrase or word they understood it and I was so perplexed their father who did speak English somewhat said oh yes you Jew -Judaism friend -Judaism peace Muslim peace .. it all makes sense now! 🙃🙃🙃 The 622 is helpful as well. How did I not know this??? I‘m very intrigued. 1y
TheBookHippie I‘m not sure what I was expecting but I do know mentoring Muslim refugees changed my opinion of Islam for sure. Not that I had a bad opinion. I was more at a loss of knowledge. I‘m still operating on little knowledge. I think bias is taught of their worst faction instead of the majority. I need to learn more. 1y
ravenlee I‘m actually really excited about this introduction 😆 I like that we‘re going to get more than the “golden years of Muslim philosophy.” I‘ve been wanting to learn more about how the Islamic world kept learning alive during the Dark Ages, and it sounds like we‘ll get into some of that here. 1y

TheBookHippie @ravenlee 🙃 I agree. 1y
bnp I'm excited to learn more about kalam & Sufism as well as falsafa. I've been curious about trying to learn this non- western view for awhile. 1y
bnp The big question I have is what is (is there) a difference between theology and philosophy in Islamic thought? Author defines kalam as theology or rational theology, so seems to include as a stream of philosophy? 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m sure that‘s the same with Christianity. If you don‘t really know any Christians and you turn on the news, all you‘re going to see is Christian nationalists and white supremacists. It would be shocking to learn after seeing that, that Christianity started in the Middle East. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie they know Yiddish?! At least the popular sayings. That‘s impressive! I swear, the level of multiculturalism around the world is so much higher than here. Kids elsewhere are exposed to multiple languages, multiple cultures regularly from the beginning. Then you get to America and we‘re so bloody insular. 🙄 (edited) 1y
GingerAntics @bnp even in western thought, theology is a branch of philosophy (you certainly wouldn‘t get that from the most vocal Christians of course). It will be interesting to see how that connection is interpreted in different traditions, though. 1y
