GingerAntics @CatLass007 @AlaSkaat if I remember correctly, the tagged book said something about them having 8 legs and 2 tentacles as the main thing that distinguished them from octopi. 2h
GingerAntics This is beyond adorable! 2h
CatLass007 @GingerAntics Hmmm. Interesting… 2h
GingerAntics @CatLass007 I only remembered that there were two additional appendages (whatever they‘re called) because two of them on the sticker were different. They do something different… I can‘t remember what now. 2h

kspenmoll I am ready too! 4w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads What is this all about? 4w
GingerAntics @DrSabrinaMoldenReads it‘s the next book we will be reading for the dead philosophers society. You can join us if you‘d like. 4w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Thanks!!! That sounds interesting! Please include me. (edited) 4w
AlaSkaat I‘ve still got to buy this book but it sounds interesting. I‘m slowly getting back into a normal reading routine after the bad few months I‘ve had, so I‘ll try to engage more this time around 🤞 1w
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat I hope everything is getting better. Ease yourself back in if you need to. No rush. No pressure. 1w
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics thank you. I‘ve had a lot of health issues come up in the middle of my grief and the past 3 months have been sooo hard. But it‘s all settling slowly… I‘m definitely making rest a priority now so will definitely have time to read! 1w
AlaSkaat Thanks for still including me btw, I‘ve been awol for so long haha I came back here after I think a year or more? And you guys were still having these discussions! So awesome 1w
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat oh no, I‘m so sorry. That always seems to make things worse. Rest is always a good time to read. Yeah, we‘re still chugging along. I‘m so glad you‘re getting to come back, though. We‘ve missed you. 1w
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics thank you! I‘ve missed it here too. It‘s really nice to be back, even if I‘m easing in slowly while I get everything back on track. I just hope the world has given me enough ‘lessons‘ for a while and I can stick to reading about them instead 😅 1w
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat girl, I know that feeling. Fingers crossed on reading instead of living the lessons. Ugh. 5d
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics 🤞🤞 the book came today. I‘ll make a start on it. I saw a lot of mixed reviews about it 🧐 4d
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat fingers crossed, we shall see 4d

The Brain | David Eagleman
post image
Pickpick

This is amazingly philosophical. It addresses the neurology behind in-groups and out-groups. It clearly lays out the ways perception is entirely inside of our brains, and even how by the time we are aware of any given moment, that moment has already passed. Eagleman takes a profoundly complex topic and makes it accessible to the masses to the point that it becomes entirely enjoyable.

Do we want to read this book next, or one of our back catalogue? Also, should we go back to having discussion questions, or did you like having a more informal format?

kspenmoll I would like to read this tagged book. Informal is fine- discussion questions if you have the inclination & time. 2mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I‘m thinking if I do questions, maybe I would just pick one for the chapter instead of trying to come up with as many as possible. Not looking at everything as a possible discussion question really let me take in the book more. 2mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics yes sounds good!! Informal one per chapter is fine by me! 2mo
Chrissyreadit I was able to get it through Libby and intend to read this one with all of you. 2mo

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie the whole series is totally worth a watch! It‘s SO good! The octopus was especially exciting, though. I‘ve been looking forward to it since the series started in the middle of reading Other Minds. 2mo

I got some new friends while we were reading. The top two are the same octopus, just reversed. The green side glows in the dark. The red one is much smaller and can actually sit on your shoulder via a little magnetic disk.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie well, the reverse of the glow in the dark one is like “don‘t make me flip this octopus around. I will release the pissed off octopus if you want to push it.” 🤣😂🤣 2mo

quietlycuriouskate I didn't know till now that I needed a reversible octopus. Well, I'm all for lifelong learning! 2mo
GingerAntics @quietlycuriouskate right? It comes indifferent colors, but one is happy and one is mad, so it‘s perfection. 2mo

This had way less philosophy than I was anticipating. I guess I misunderstood what was being discussed and described by the word “consciousness.” It was still a really interesting book. I have an all new appreciation for octopi, and my love of the sea is deeper than before. Maybe not a great book from a philosophical perspective, but still a really good book about life on earth, especially in the ocean.

CatLass007 Thank you for the tag. I‘m sorry I missed the group discussions. I hope I get to participate in the discussions for the next book. 2mo
AlaSkaat I expected more philosophy, and I think if I had started the book with only cephalopods and biology in mind, I would have enjoyed it more. I kept waiting for the philosophy to begin and felt like something was missing. 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
AlaSkaat That said, I still found it fascinating. I knew very little about octopuses before so their behavior and intelligence was new to me.
It‘s a shame they only live for a few years. They don‘t get to pass down their knowledge with each generation like us. Wonder how it‘d be if they could communicate And lived longer

AlaSkaat I‘m confused about what consciousness or intelligence is now. Is it just an awareness of our surroundings or ability to communicate that awareness? Do they have consciousness or just intelligence? (edited) 2mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat consciousness, as its most basic level is the subjective experience of being. So basically, you know you exist. It‘s been a discussion in philosophy for millennia, pretty much from the beginning of philosophy. Biology discussing consciousness is fairly new. I wish he had defined his terms, because I feel like maybe he is using it interchangeably with intelligence. 2mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat Of course, without being able to talk with a cephalopod, you cannot know if they have consciousness or not. I don‘t think communication is necessarily limited to creatures with consciousness and to claim such is simply short sighted (and small sighted if that‘s a thing). 2mo
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat this book was definitely more science than philosophy, and I think consciousness is used slightly different between science and philosophy. I believe the definition is slightly different, but the actually differences in what is means when a scientist vs a philosopher talk about and does research with consciousness is quite remarkably different. 2mo
