Distance makes the heart grow fonder, but what of the eyes? Do they show the sorrow of our parting?
Damn him.
She needed Yassen Knight as much as he needed her.
“You‘re killing me, Yassen,” she said softly, “and at the same time, you‘re the one keeping me from death.” Her eyes met his. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Elena…I…” He paused, looking down at his hands, the blackened and the pale, and then finally met her gaze. “You survive.”
”Ash begets ash. Heavens burn to reveal the truth. May the sinners be forgiven, and the pretenders see their doom.”

Her words felt like a dagger, sharper than the slingsword she had once held to his neck.
Grief was a double-edged sword from which they both drew blood.
“You saved her. Why?”
Yassen looked past him to Elena‘s fading form.
“Because even though the desert does not claim me as its own, she does,” he whispered. “I took an oath.”
“I would be there, with you. Even if we‘re on opposite sides again, I‘ll still find you.”
“She would disapprove.”
“Rightly so.”
“But you, my sweet Knight, like to break the rules.”
“Where did you learn to dance?” she asked in a low voice as she began to loosen the knot.
“Fighting is like dancing,” he said, never breaking from her gaze. “Isn‘t it?”
“It‘s better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you‘re not.”
“So lend me your hearts. Let us work together to show the world what Ravence can really do. So we the blessed few.”
“May the sun dawn upon our lands,” Leo said.
“And the fire burn within our hearts,” the crowd intoned.
Honesty, when used strategically, was a finely edged knife.
“Ravence has survived because it knows what it means to burn. It knows loss, yet its people continue to believe.”
“‘Faith is stronger than any king.‘”
He, the orphan from the desert outskirts, would show them. He had to.
