Dark Nights of the Soul
Dark Nights of the Soul: A Guide to Finding Your Way Through Life's Ordeals | Thomas Moore
3 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Every human life is made up of the light and the dark, the happy and the sad, the vital and the deadening. How you think about this rhythm of moods makes all the difference. Our lives are filled with emotional tunnels: the loss of a loved one or end of a relationship, aging and illness, career disappointments or just an ongoing sense of dissatisfaction with life. Society tends to view these dark nights in clinical terms as obstacles to be overcome as quickly as possible. But Moore shows how honoring these periods of fragility as periods of incubation and positive opportunities to delve the souls deepest needs can provide healing and a new understanding of lifes meaning. Dark Nights of the Soul presents these metaphoric dark nights not as the enemy, but as times of transition, occasions to restore yourself, and transforming rites of passage, revealing an uplifting and inspiring new outlook on such topics as: The healing power of melancholy The sexual dark night and the mysteries of matrimony Finding solace during illness and in aging Anxiety, anger, and temporary Insanities Linking creativity, spirituality, and emotional struggles Finding meaning and beauty in the darkness

On a scorching hot day, in the lounge my current read.

It was from #ChristmasBookSwap, and the previous reader did highlight some texts...I don't really like that, but the book is worth pursuing so keeping me glued (despite lines and highlights)

Do you underline or highlight texts in your book?

erzascarletbookgasm Nope! 👎Only school and college text books which I owned. 5y

A very close family member has terminal cancer and is in palliative care now. It's a difficult time for me and my family. In hard times I often turn to Thomas Moore's Dark Nights of the Soul. I find it provides a lot of comfort. I would love some recommendations for books that people have found useful and/or helpful around grief, death and dying and loss. Fiction or non-fiction. Thanks Litsy!

Christy2318 During the end days of my mom & aunt's battles with cancer, I needed books that were light and fluffy and gave me a respite from thinking about hard things. However I liked The Year of Magical Thinking & The End of Your Life Book Club later on. 8y
readinginthedark I second @Christy2318 's recommendation for The End of Your Life Book Club. Really touching without overwhelming you with sadness or regret. 8y
