Dinged
Dinged: (A Game Changer companion novel) | Tommy Greenwald
4 posts | 3 read
A star football player watches his father deteriorate from injuries he suffered playing the very same sport Caleb Springer is the up-and-coming star freshman quarterback on the high school football team, which isn't a surprise considering his dad, Sammy Springer, was an NFL superstar and is now the town celebrity. College scouts are already snooping around Caleb, and his future seems set. But just as Calebs glory days begin, his dad starts to change. Hes forgetting things and getting angry at random times. Caleb is forced to confront a bleak possibility: The sport that gives him so much status and self-worth might be the cause of his dads strange behavior. Will Caleb keep playing the sport of his dreams, even if he knows how dangerous it can be?

High school freshman Caleb Springer is a superstar quarterback. He gained his love of football from his dad, a retired NFL player who earned the name “Dinger” Springer due to being “dinged” (blows to the head) so many times. Just as Caleb is garnering attention from college FB recruiters, “Dinger” becomes forgetful, erratic and, at times, explosive…

Caleb is the son of a former NFL player and the star quarterback of his high school team while still a freshman. He deals with the pressure of football, a girlfriend who‘s not really a football fan, and his father‘s increasingly erratic behavior which seems to be caused by his football career. Greenwald wants readers to think about the potential dangers of football at all levels, but he also clearly expresses the joy and intensity of the game.

Daisey This was an interesting read, but I‘m not sure how well the intended #MiddleGrade and #YA audience will appreciate it. There are a lot of serious aspects alongside the football, like Greenwald‘s previous novel Game Changer. It also reminded me of Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Wilson but with more football than either of those.

This is my current book to read while my students have independent reading time. Tommy Greenwald describes the intensity of football games well and doesn‘t shy away from the serious aspects of sports culture either. In this one, Caleb is a young and impressive quarterback for his high school team while also beginning to realize the after effects of playing professional football on his father. 🏈
