Munichs: A Novel | David Peace

Pickpick

So cleverly written, I thought it was nonfiction. I found myself looking at the cover several times to see the word NOVEL.

The event truly happened. The author confessed not being a fan, but hates how the press puts down the team by calling the players, "Munichs." How awful. Survival of a plane crash in the 50s. Then having to deal with the offense of media, courts, fans, etc.

Mr. Peace, you may not be a fan, but you certainly made me one.

AmyG Hahahaha…I read this quickly as “munchies”. 🤣 5d
TrishB Massive event in footie here. Not my team, but very sad 😢💔 5d
rabbitprincess Ooh, Christopher Eccleston narrates this? It was already on my to-read list but I might have to add the audio as well :) 5d

I loved the tv show and now, having read the book, I understand why people keep coming back to it to adapt it. The writing is so absorbing and propulsive, this is narrative nonfiction at its best. It does help if you like or have liked football, but I don‘t think it‘s necessary.

Texreader Apparently it was filmed on my old high school football field, where I spent countless Friday nights. But I still haven‘t seen the show or read the book. 2w
audraelizabeth Ive seen the shiw and the movie. I prefer the movie. 2w

May was a toss up between this and Stephen Fry's excellent Odyssey. Anyone who knows me knows I love Greek mythology, but I'm kind of a football fanatic, so it was an easy choice. Both were 5 star reads, and highly recommended.

TheEllieMo A great read for lovers of football. I‘m afraid that I didn‘t inherit my Dad‘s love of the game, though 2w
