Storylines
Storylines: A novel about beauty, vulnerability and all that we don't see | Carrie Cox
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Delicately balances the joy and pain of what it is to be human with love and humour... an impossibly beautiful story.' - Meredith Jaff Nessa keeps the world at arm's length. It's easier that way, for everyone. Her orbit is no bigger than her sister, her parents and a solitary work colleague with a penchant for dying words. But even these people don't see the real Nessa. Saddled with her father's impossible gift, a rundown homestead in the middle of nowhere, Nessa reluctantly develops a wellness retreat of sorts - a no-frills escape for women. All too quickly, keeping her distance becomes a trickier dance, even for someone so good at it. But the toughest test of Nessa's resolve takes the shape of her feisty niece Lily, whose offer to help promote Navada comes with caveats and who ultimately holds up a mirror to a life that neither of them feels ready to see. Deeply moving and sharply funny, Storylines is a novel about how we see ourselves in an age of distortion.

#Januarywrapup 5 books. 4 fiction and 1 non.
Australian books dominated my January 2024 reading, with the exception of Tomorrow.
All of them most definitely picks.

A local author. There was a lot I related to in this book. I really enjoyed it. I loved when she mentioned places I know.
Great descriptions of the bush.
Made me laugh and in one spot I felt very teary. Guess her relationship with her dad reminded me of mine.
Loved that she called the people she cared for in the old folks home , her lovelies .
A delight to watch characters grow and develop over the story.

The importance of story telling.

MrsMalaprop Glad you enjoyed it too. 10mo
Jeg @MrsMalaprop thought it would make a good book club book. My edition had questions in the back. Sensible ones too I thought. 10mo
MrsMalaprop I did actually buy it originally thinking I might choose it for book club. 10mo

She also believes that given a choice between a week of sex and a week of reading, most women of a certain age would eschew foreplay for a forward in a heartbeat.😊❤️

My first read of 2024. I bought this because the author lives locally and I saw a couple of positive reviews.
Ness is a nurse working in an aged-care facility in Perth. She runs a retreat business ‘down south‘ on the side. There are lots of stories in this novel, from Ness, the residents of the nursing home she calls ‘lovelies‘, and the people who attend her retreats.
I really enjoyed it. A great holiday read. #ozfiction
