I had so much fun reading this with the #HashtagBrigade, although I still question my judgment in deciding to read both this and Nicholas Nickleby simultaneously. This was a re-read for me, but I remembered little about the twists and turns of the narrative, so the unveiling of the various secrets and plots was still largely a surprise. 😆 Also, I‘m happy to report that my review from August 2011 still holds up! ⤵️

BarbaraJean I loved this. It‘s deliciously Victorian (oh, the melodrama!), and reminded me both of why I love Victorian lit so much, as well as of its quirks which thoroughly annoy me. Of course, the most capable woman is ugly... and her energy, intelligence, and presence of mind are continually referred to as being “like a man‘s.” Although, Marian herself seems to mock and poke fun at these conventions throughout, which was great fun. ⤵️ 2mo

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) What more could you ask: A despicable villain, a conniving husband, a convoluted conspiracy complete with uncanny likenesses and mistaken identity, “horrifying” secrets of the past finally uncovered, a lovely fainting heroine (contrasted drastically with her capable and ugly half-sister), and, of course, the entirely annoying invalid uncle, whose parentheticals just killed me: ⤵️ 2mo

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) The date was towards the end of June, or the beginning of July, and the name (in my opinion a remarkably vulgar one) was Fanny.”
“She had carefully put the two letters into her bosom. (What have I to do with her bosom?)”
“...she had thought she should like a cup of tea. (Am I responsible for any of these vulgar fluctuations, which begin with unhappiness and end with tea?)”

Murder! Conspiracy! Intrigue! That was a great deal of fun, made even more so by reading it with the #hashtagbrigade. It has its issues due to the time period, but the characters are surprisingly complex—even the villains, while being over-the-top evil, have real depth. Oh #hashtagbrigade how I loved this
An early work of detective fiction with a gothic vibe that kicks off with an unknown woman dressed completely in white on the run from an asylum. Oh what a wicked web we weave …… so many bizarre over the top characters doing nefarious things ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I laughed and I railed and I held my breath assuming the worst at all times while the good guys tried to triumph.

mcctrish I laughed out loud twice during #countporkchop ‘s side of the story with his insertions about how awesome he is 🤣🤣 but cringed at how much he looovvvveeddd Marian ( but it saved her so yay Marian) every time someone describes him I hear in the back of my mind “how fat was he?” like part of a running joke 2mo

Clare-Dragonfly I was right! 🙌🏻 Though what Walt discovers seems to prove above all that #percypig‘s so-called parents weren‘t married. So why does Mrs. Clements think Sir Felix was married? There are more mysteries to unravel. I also disagree with him: I think #percypig is just the kind of idiot to set the fire on purpose. Clare-Dragonfly I am growing stronger in my belief that #percypig isn‘t really who he says he is! If he was born abroad it would be pretty easy to fake—either he switched places with the real Glyde child, or there was no real one, or he‘s illegitimate and just pretended to be legit when he came back. But how does Mrs. Catherick know his secret? And who is Anne‘s father? And could Mrs. Catherick not really be her mother? So many mysteries! 2mo

BarbaraJean @Ruthiella The Count is pretty memorable! I never trusted #countporkchop on this reading, but I don't know if that's my memory or just that he's clearly dangerous from the beginning. When I correctly anticipate plot points, I'm never quite sure whether I'm picking up the clues Collins is giving us, or if I'm just remembering it from before and not realizing that I remember it. 😂 2mo

Bookwormjillk I felt like Uncle Crabby in his room yesterday. Every time I tried to read this section someone would talk to me. My nerves! All caught up now and you all said what I was thinking. I‘m loving reading about the same events from different points of view. 2mo

Clare-Dragonfly I appreciate how Collins drums in that Percy is a jerk and not to be trusted. As though we didn‘t all hate him already, the dog can‘t stand him. Dogs know! Do you think Collins was getting paid by the word like Dickens? That last section was a whole lot of words to say “he gets all her money if she dies first” 😂 And even if he doesn‘t have nefarious plans… this book is still in a high maternal mortality era. 2mo

First book completed-November 2024. I started this book late on October but it is a long one so I finished it on November. Three editions? Well I knew I will like the story😜Did I mention I need😳😜the Spanish edition from Alma publishing? It is so pretty😍 Im a book collector😌
confess that I was so interested at the beginning of the book but there were some parts that I felt bored. But there were only few pages because I was intrigued again⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) I liked the eerie atmosphere and Walter‘s voice. Too many details? Maybe but they were so well described as expected in this time. I liked it and this could be a good re-read for me. I don‘t know how with so many books I have to read🤣
