Happy Friday! Headed to Hilo for the second time this week for a day of meetings. Breakfast, coffee & hopefully a few chapters of the tagged book. I‘m trying to finish for March #FoodAndLit & #BookedInTime
I have the day off today. Starting off with a leisurely #BookAndBreakfast - pulled a scone from the freezer and made some tea to go along with this book which started slow but has turned into quite the page turner.
If you want to learn about the famine in Ireland in the 1800‘s, if you want to learn about life on a ship leaving Ireland heading to New York and if you like a story that involves a murderer on board the ship, this book is for you. There‘s even an affair going on! This book is brutal and yet I‘m glad I read it. It‘s a history lesson that needs to be told and remembered. What happened in Ireland was a terrible thing.
This is the story about a miserable excuse of a man and the man he‘s been coerced to murder, an Englishman who lived in #Ireland, during their escape aboard ship to NYC from the famine. But a lot of folks have reasons to commit the murder, and does he really “deserve” to die? There are a lot of side stories that all tie back to these two characters. I wasn‘t terribly keen on the writer‘s style but it was a good, interesting read. #bookedintime ⬇️
What happens when Ireland meets a Hawaii institution. Thought I‘d share my lunch & dinner for St. Patrick‘s Day. I didn‘t feel like cooking this weekend but wanted corned beef & cabbage. The closest easiest thing was to run to Zippy‘s (think Hawaii Denny‘s) for their special today. No potatoes, it‘s served plate-lunch style with 2 scoops rice & mac salad! 😂 And of course I had to add-on the drink lilikoi punch & Napple special (apple turnover).⬇️
We celebrated St.Patrick‘s Day tonight with Irish Beef Stew made with Guinness Extra-Stout, & Irish apple cake. The cake was a hit- the stew was strong for my husband. He likes my Julia Child Beef Stew better. #FoodandLit #March #Ireland 💚☘️🇮🇪

Thoughts so far? I‘ll post some questions at the end of the month.

I‘m coloring all things Irish while I listen to the tagged book #bookedintime @Cuilin
Dickens makes another appearance! I think I know one of the reasons @Cuilin likes this book so much!! 😉

Ha! Aspiring novelist Dixon doesn‘t have a high regard for Dickens!

Food:plan to make Irish beef stew with Guinness stout, apple cake.
Get yourself cosy and join in our Sunday night #HyggeHour readathon. I'm going to start the tagged.
What will you be reading? 📚🍫🕯☕️

I found this boarding pass in my used book!
John here is going from Shannon to London on the 29th of May (year unknown) and he is in the smoking section!
Amazing how an Ireland to England flight stub ends up in a used bookstore in Portland Oregon.
Found a nail in my tire as I was running errands, now patiently waiting the tire guys to clear me to drive, and this is why we never leave home without a book.
Starting this #bookedintime read so far it is a bit wordy for me but going to push through and hope I can get in the groove
I had to look up the word ‘bridewell‘. It was the opposite of what I thought it meant.
Correction repost for #BookedInTime as apparently I cannot count!! Apologies for any confusion.

#BookedInTime So many stickies and that‘s just the prologue!!
#FirstLineFriday @ShyBookOwl
“All night long he would walk the ship, from bow to stern, from dusk until quarterlight, that stick like limping man from Connemara with the drooping shoulders and ash-coloured clothes”.
This is my next audiobook, which I‘ll be reading for both #foodandlit #Ireland and #bookedintime. @Catsandbooks @Cuilin
I‘m “borrowing” this awesome reading plan by @Cuilin for #bookedintime because her timing is just perfect for #foodandlit in March. I hope you‘ll join #bookedintime and #foodandlit to enjoy what looks to be a fascinating story about the Irish. #Ireland @Catsandbooks

Murder mystery on a tall ship!! Tagging all members and those who expressed interest. All are welcome. We start Saturday March 1st. I broke it into four parts. I will check in on Saturdays. Let me know if you have any questions.
Repost for @Cuilin
Tagging #BookedInTime but open to all.
⚠️ This book is dark and detailed as it describes a voyage on a coffin ship during “An Gorta Mor”, the Irish famine. There are mysteries and many moral conflicts. Who‘s in?

#12booksofchristmas @Andrew65 I knew I would love this May choice and it had been sat on my shelf for a while until a booked2022 prompt made me pick it up and what a joy. This maritime adventure is set in the height of the Irish potato famine. A well told multi character story which had me turning the page and absorbing every word.

What a brilliantly told story of the experience of people escaping the potato famine to the promised land. Told by a reporter present on the ship this is a finely woven mystery that tells of a murder, the killer, and conditions in Ireland at the time. The interconnected lives add to the tension + it is dickensian in telling esp with hid cameo. A joy to read .
Absolutely a pick, set on a coffin ship outta Ireland.. cool cast of characters, well paced.. historical illustrations and quotes interspersed. This is a ripper 🙂
Pius Mulvey was mindful of the terrible task he had to perform the whole journey.

This is my all time favorite book. It is breathtakingly good. It has been made into a wonderful stage play by a theater group in Galway but has not got the #movieortvshow treatment as far as I know. #bibliomaynia I have three copies in my house in case I convince someone to read it. Yep, that good!
An engrossing read, encompassing everything about human relationships. Pius Mulvey - what a character. So many metaphors between the ship and Ireland at the time.
Thankyou @Balibee146 for the tag 👍🏻♥️ #FriYaYintro
1. Tagged book ... page turner that got me back into reading. Also Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell... got me back into reading another time
2. I do ! If I‘m last one out of it ( which isn‘t very often ... but I go back & make it anyway 🙄
3. Hot is definitely better .... but I can do cold in a push
4. Size 6 in my country 🇮🇪
5. I tag all who havnt played yet & will comment 👍🏻👍🏻
This was excellent! It is captivating and has surprising twists and turns. Both poignant and at the same time a nail biter.
#MarchIntoThe70s #ImmigrantSong first book that comes to mind is this one by Joseph O‘Conner .... set in 1847 The Star of the Sea is a famine ship heading from Ireland to New York ... brilliant characters & great murder story too ... I found it unputdownable 👍🏻💚
Just started this. I am 50 pages in and loving it.
#QuotsyJan18 #Macabre @TK-421 I read this book back when I wasn‘t really reading. Went into Waterstones & asked for a book that would be a page turner. Well, it really was just that. Pius Mulvey is sometimes a macabre character- I don‘t have the book to quote - but he came to mind for this prompt. Loved this book. But it took another few years before I became a constant reader again. Litsy is making sure I will continue to be one 🙏🙏🙏
Amongst those so poor that they deserve no shame, shame lasts longer than life. Humiliation their only inheritance, and denial the coinage in which it is paid.
