Running Home to Shadows
Running Home to Shadows: Memories of TV's First Supernatural Soap from Today's Grown-Up Kids | Elizabeth Massie, Nancy Holder, Charles R. Rutledge
6 posts | 1 reading
School's out, Barnabas is IN! They were a generation all their own, the army of children who ran home from school to watch Dark Shadows, TV's very first supernatural soap. A breed apart, they set aside the worship of mundane pop stars to follow vampires, witches, and werewolves. From 1966 to 1971, they were daytime Monster Kids...and today they have stories to tell. Writer-editor Jim Beard has gathered these grown-up kids together in this tome to tell those tales. Their experiences are sometimes tragic and terrifying, yet also uplifting and inspirational, but above all, Dark Shadows touched them so deeply as to leave an indelible impression on their lives that lasts to this day. Return to Collinwood to brave the stormy nights and rainswept days of yore to listen to this coven of writers spin yarns of childhood encounters with Barnabas, Angelique, Quentin, Vicky, Maggie, and their compatriots. Cross the threshold of the Old House, take a seat by the crackling fire, and make yourself comfortable to the strains of maudlin music issuing forth from the gramophone-the ghosts of the past are about to arise in RUNNING HOME TO SHADOWS. Won't you join us? Edited by Jim Beard with Charles R. Rutledge Cover Illustration by Mark Maddox with Logo Design and Formatting by Maggie Ryel Foreword by Kathryn Leigh Scott Featuring Essays by Greg Cox, Mark Dawidziak, Dave Dykema, Bob Freeman, Ed Gross, Nancy Holder, Tina Hunt, Katherine Kerestman, Mark Maddox (with Ed Catto), Elizabeth Massie, Kimberly Oswald, Martin Powell, Dana Pride, Mark Rainey, Michael Rogers, Charles R. Rutledge, Chris Ryan, Frank Schildiner, Duane Spurlock, and Jeff Thompson. Afterword by Rich Handley

My older brother told me that there‘s a good biopic about Jonathan Frid streaming on FreeVee, Dark Shadows and Beyond: The Jonathan Frid Story. Has anyone seen it? #runningtoshadows

MemoirsForMe I haven‘t seen it, but thanks for the heads up. I‘ll check it out! 7mo
rubyslippersreads I‘ll look for it too. Thanks for letting us know. 🦇 7mo

Don‘t Mess with Angelique! Loved this character but she sure scared me when I ran home to watch DS & saw those bewitching eyes. 👀This 1st essay wasn‘t my favorite. Ballet analogy? Angelique stirred up big trouble when anyone came between her & her true love Barnabas, which made the show!Thrilled when Lara Parker wrote her riveting steamy novels but so sad when she passed last year.

rubyslippersreads I was lucky enough to meet her (along with Kathryn Leigh Scott) at a book signing when the DS movie came out. I agree the ballet analogy was a bit weak. 7mo
PurpleyPumpkin Well, this looks like fun! Don‘t think I‘ve heard of Dark Shadows before. I wonder if it‘s streamed somewhere. I‘ll have to look it up. Glad you enjoyed it!😉 7mo
rubyslippersreads @PurpleyPumpkin It‘s streaming on Freevee (Amazon Prime) and also on Tubi. Many people recommend starting with the Barnabas storyline, since that‘s when the show‘s popularity really took off. On Tubi, that‘s where it starts (episode 210). 7mo

PurpleyPumpkin Thanks @rubyslippersreads! I‘ll definitely check it out!👍🏽 7mo
MemoirsForMe @rubyslippersreads They were both so nice, weren‘t they? They really enjoyed meeting and talking to their fans. Did you ever attend the DS conventions? The one in NY always included a tour of the actual Collingwood house. I could only attend the ones in California. 7mo
MemoirsForMe @PurpleyPumpkin It‘s a very campy show, but as a kid, I couldn‘t get enough of it! It was so different than anything else back then. Will look forward to hearing what you think. 7mo
MemoirsForMe @rubyslippersreads I didn‘t realize it was on Amazon Prime! 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻Thanks for the heads up. Have you been watching it? 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme My brother and I were just watching the other day. We‘re in 1897. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme No, I missed the conventions. I bet they were fun. 7mo
MemoirsForMe @rubyslippersreads They were! The ones in CA were a lot smaller than NYC. There had a sit-down dinner. One cast member would sit at each table and then rotate around. They were a lot less expensive than today‘s cons. 7mo
MemoirsForMe @rubyslippersreads I must start watching with my sister. She‘s another DS groupie like I‘m sure your brother is. 😊 7mo
marleed Dark Shadows was everything! 7mo
MemoirsForMe @marleed Yes! 🙌🏻 Did you run home to watch DS too? @rubyslippersreads and a few DS fans are doing a #buddyread, so feel free to join in and share your DS stories! 🧛🏻‍♂️ #hometoshadows 7mo
rubyslippersreads @marleed Please join us. It‘s so much fun to discuss DS. 🦇 7mo
marleed @rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme This soap opera and the initial summer of All MyChildren are seared in my memory. It must have been before my older sisters had summer jobs but I so well remember watching both shows with them. We seldom watched TV as a group of siblings - this is my only memory of a group tv activity. I had a huge girl crush on Quentin Collins and still can‘t believe I didn‘t name my son Quentin! 7mo
MemoirsForMe @marleed I bet Quentin was a popular kid‘s name in those days! 😁 I watched DS with my sister too. We also watched the soaps (One Life to Live just before DS) because my mom and grandmother watched them all..and they wouldn‘t let us touch the remote! Quentin is a hottie, but my crush was Chris Jennings. 🥰 7mo

Yes, KLS, your 200-year-old vampire boyfriend was why I watched! 🤣 (I still have my Josette‘s music box.)

I found it very touching that the author learned about DS from his wife and wanted to honor her with this book.

#hometoshadows

tpixie Pretty music box!!! Yes- very touching! 7mo
CatLass007 You have a music box that plays Josette‘s theme?!! I am so jealous. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 I actually don‘t know if it still works, but it‘s on display next to my Barnabas bobble head. 😁 7mo

CatLass007 A Barnabas bobble head?!! 7mo
MemoirsForMe Great photo! I even have the Dark Shadows album. I played it constantly! Agreed! A very sweet tribute to the author‘s wife. @CatLass007 @tpixie 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme I have the DS CD, but my brother (a gramophone and vintage phonograph collector, thanks to Quentin), has our vinyl album. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 Mine is slightly different than this one, but this is where I got it: https://www.mpihomevideo.com/products/dark-shadows-barnabas-bobblehead-doll 7mo
MemoirsForMe @rubyslippersreads My sister, also a fanatic fan like us, has the Barnabas bobble head! I think she has an action figure too. 7mo
MemoirsForMe I‘ve been savoring each chapter and falling a bit behind. Ed Gross is my favorite so far. I started listening to his podcast and his interview with Jonathan Frid! 7mo
MemoirsForMe And did Elizabeth Massie dare to call our Barnabas “too craggy and creepy? 🤭🧛🏻‍♂️😆 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme I‘m behind too. Hope to catch up this week. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme That‘s awful! I remember an article that described him as having “a face like a garden trowel.” 😠 7mo
MemoirsForMe That‘s just wrong! 😤 7mo
MemoirsForMe Are you making progress on this read? I‘m almost finished…and reading this one made me order 2 more DS books: Dreams of the Dark and the Daybook. 🤦🏻‍♀️🦇 6mo
rubyslippersreads I need to catch up. I have both Daybooks, but I‘ll wait for your review of Dreams of the Dark, since it‘s kind of pricey. 😁🦇 6mo

@UwannaPublishme Look what arrived today! Thank you for your generosity, my friend. And thank you for the extra, extra early birthday wishes. I know that Litsy is a wonderful community of readers. #LitsyLove is a fine group of which I am proud to be a part. And now I can participate in the #buddyread about a show that played an important role in my childhood. #hometoshadows #TheresNoPlaceLikeCollinwood

CatLass007 I loved Dark Shadows!! I‘m not sure if I can get the book in order to join the buddy read. But if you‘re doing daily posts please include me in your tags. 7mo

CatLass007 @rubyslippersreads Thank you. @tpixie I can‘t read ebooks because of eye strain. 7mo
tpixie @CatLass007 🩷 I hope you can find the audio or book 📕 (edited) 7mo
CatLass007 @tpixie It‘s not available in audio and my book funds for the month are exhausted. I can‘t decide which is more precious the money I have to spend on books or the time to read all the books I already have. 7mo
MemoirsForMe Yay! Love meeting fellow Dark Shadows fans! @tpixie @CatLass007 Oh, I‘m tempted now to rewatch the show too. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 Even if you can‘t read the book, I think you should join us anyway. It‘s always fun to talk about DS. 😊 7mo
tpixie @CatLass007 Luckily, there certainly are plenty of other books to read also!!! I‘m working on going through my bookshelves to save money. Good luck finding your next read!! (edited) 7mo

MemoirsForMe @tpixie Hope you can join us! I have quite a few DS books on my shelves. This may be the start of several DS #buddyreads 😊🦇 7mo
tpixie @rubyslippersreads that was an interesting video! Thanks for sharing! 7mo
tpixie @UwannaPublishme I did download the e-book. I‘m going to try to fit it in. It sounds like fun. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme mentioned other DS books. If anyone has Hoopla, quite a few of the Marilyn Ross novels are available as audiobooks, read by Kathryn Leigh Scott. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @UwannaPublishme @tpixie @CatLass007 I‘m running a bit behind. I‘ll try to catch up tomorrow. 😊 7mo

MemoirsForMe Perfect to have Kathryn Leigh Scott write the foreword! It‘s stirring up so many memories already! My cousin was one of the many fans who hung out outside the NY studio. She‘d call us and report the scoop. I was so jealous when she met Chris Jennings (the first werewolf). I thought he was so cute. I also love how Dan Curtis consulted the fans about a story arc. We did get so immersed in the details, didn‘t we? 7mo

CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme I don‘t remember Chris Jennings. Hmm. I guess that sexy Quentin Collins played by David Selby erased him from my memory.🐺 7mo
MemoirsForMe @CatLass007 You‘ll have to Google the actor who played Chris (Don Briscoe) and see what you think. But I agree, Quentin is a hottie too. ☺️ 7mo
CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme I was looking at the IMDb pages for Dark Shadows and several of the actors. I discovered that David Selby is from my home state of West Virginia. And there was a story going around town that Jonathan Frid had moved to my hometown and opened an antique store. I have no idea if it was true. For some reason Mom didn‘t want to drive around town looking for him. 😁 7mo
CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme Okay, I just googled Jonathan Frid and there‘s no mention of his ownership of an antique store in West Virginia or anywhere else. Urban legend. 7mo
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme Quentin was very handsome, but I‘m always true to Barnabas. 😄 7mo
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme I never heard the antique store rumor. I‘m sure it would have been visited by fans if it were true. 7mo
MemoirsForMe @CatLass007 I‘ve read several DS books and attended quite a few DS conventions. Can‘t recall any mention of JS owning an antique store. I‘m sure it would have been mobbed as @rubyslippersreads said. 😊 7mo
