Breakaway
Breakaway | Jennifer Weiner
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner comes a warmhearted and empowering new novel about love, family, friendship, secrets, and a life-changing journey. Thirty-three-year-old Abby Stern has made it to a happy place. True, she still has gig jobs instead of a career, and the apartment where she's lived since college still looks like she's just moved in. But she's got good friends, her bike, and her bicycling club in Philadelphia. She's at peace with her plus-size body--at least, most of the time--and she's on track to marry Mark Medoff, her childhood sweetheart, a man she met at the weight-loss camp that her perpetually dieting mother forced her to attend. Fifteen years after her final summer at Camp Golden Hills, when Abby reconnects with a half-his-size Mark, it feels like the happy ending she's always wanted. Yet Abby can't escape the feeling that something isn't right...or the memories of one thrilling night she spent with a man named Sebastian two years previously. When Abby gets a last-minute invitation to lead a cycling trip from NYC to Niagara Falls, she's happy to have time away from Mark, a chance to reflect and make up her mind. But things get complicated fast. First, Abby spots a familiar face in the group--Sebastian, the one-night stand she thought she'd never see again. Sebastian is a serial dater who lives a hundred miles away. In spite of their undeniable chemistry, Abby is determined to keep her distance. Then there's a surprise last-minute addition to the trip: her mother, Eileen, the woman Abby blames for a lifetime of body shaming and insecurities she's still trying to undo. Over two weeks and more than seven hundred miles, strangers become friends, hidden truths come to light, a teenage girl with a secret unites the riders in unexpected ways...and Abby is forced to reconsider everything she believes about herself, her mother, and the nature of love.

Got this as an easy poolside Spring Break read and it didn‘t disappoint! Some eye roll predictable points but also some unexpected additions which made this easy to read.

I love Jennifer Weiner but I felt that this one didn‘t call to me as her previous ones did…I was so wrong!

I loved this story. Abby and Sebastian will forever hold a place in my heart (and so will every character in this story!). This is a story about putting yourself out there and trusting yourself, that all those worst-case scenarios will most likely never come true. And that you are worthy, no matter what you look like.

Life hurts. It‘s full of heartache, loss, and disappointment, and even the best things come salted with sorrow. But you can‘t leave yourself open to the good things—happiness, true love, real connection—if you aren‘t willing to risk being hurt 🚲🛣️

I was drawn to this rom com about a plus sized cyclist leading a bike tour. It was a lot deeper than I was looking for - very much about a women‘s right to feel comfortable in her body whatever its size and her right to choose what to do with her body. While it wasn‘t what I was looking for, I liked this aspect. The main romance fell flat for me because I didn‘t care if they got together or not.

I feel like I might have outgrown Jennifer Weiner‘s stories. When her first book came out I was in my 20s and really related to the story. As she expanded her character range out to mothers with young children and on I grew at a similar speed. I haven‘t read anything from her in a few years and I have to say I found the characters in this kind of annoying and immature. And the secondary plot involving a girl on the bike trip felt like it ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: didn‘t really fit. It felt weirdly thrown in. I also wasn‘t a big fan of the narrators, especially the male voice. All in all I can‘t say it was bad, it just didn‘t really hit me like I was expecting it to. 🌟🌟🌟 1y

Abby doesn‘t know what to do with her life which, at 33, is a bit of a problem. Plus, her great on paper bf Mark wants them to move in. But then Abby grabs the chance to lead a 2 week bike trip through NY in the hopes of sorting things out. However, a hot one night stand from her last just happens to be on the trip, along with…her mother. I really liked this! It felt like a return to Weiner‘s early books in a good way.

This is kind of odd. On the one hand it‘s a romance where JE creates an interesting protagonist choosing between two men and neither choice is a bad decision . In the midst of this fun romance is a serious (might I say, break away) plot of providing support to a red-state teenager as she seeks an abortion in blue-state NY. Ultimately it gives pause to consider someone else‘s life is not the narrative you create while living your own story.

BooksNBowls Beautiful review! You said it perfectly! 13mo
marleed @BooksNBowls It‘s talented writing to place such a thought provoking sub story into a romance. 13mo

I can‘t believe how long it‘s been since I read one of Weiner‘s novels! Her latest, centering around Abby, in her mid-thirties & directionless, makes for a hard-to-put-down romance! Growing up overweight, Abby has a difficult relationship with her mother & some qualms about her boyfriend. When she agrees to lead a cross-NY bike trip at the last minute, the trip is complicated by the surprise of her mother‘s presence & her only one night stand!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm surprised how much I liked this one. It wasn't perfect. The conflicts were too easily resolved, and most of the characters were somewhat flat. But it was engaging and hard to put down, and I really ended up enjoying it. I will say that if you're at all socially conservative, this book will likely piss you off.

My print tbr for August's #Rushathon. The six on the left are my #ARCs that I want to finish. The four on the right are just a few of my #BOTMs. I'd love to finish all of these, but I probably won't.

Andrew65 More great choices. 1y

This is fun. I really like this author. This centers around a youngish woman who has yet to find her way. She ends up leading a 2 week bike trip across NY. It's fun. I liked the biking aspect.

I adore her books and this is a great novel! Abby becomes a leader on bike trips that are adventurous and arduous. But when she sees an old flame with whom she had a 1-night-stand, she is worried things will go awry. And of course they do for SO many reasons! But there‘s friendship, family, compassion, and grace which makes this such a pleasure to read!
