A heartfelt debut middle-grade told from the unique vantage points of a witty typewriter and an introverted boy--for fans of Wishtree and A Rover's Story.Being a typewriter is not as easy as it looks. Surrounded by books (notorious attention hogs) and recently replaced by a computer, Olivetti has been forgotten by the Brindle family--the family he's lived with for years. The Brindles are busy humans, apart from 12-year-old Ernest, who would rather be left alone with his collection of Oxford English Dictionaries. The least they could do was remember Olivetti once in a while, since he remembers every word they've typed on him. It's a thankless job, keeping memories alive. Olivetti gets a rare glimpse of action from Ernest's mom, Beatrice--his used-to-be most frequent visitor--only for her to drop him off at Heartland Pawn Shop and leave him helplessly behind. When Olivetti learns Beatrice has mysteriously gone missing afterward, he believes he can help find her. He breaks the only rule of the "typewriterly code" and types back to Ernest, divulging Beatrice's memories stored inside him. Their search takes them across San Francisco--chasing clues, maybe committing a few misdemeanors. As Olivetti spills out the past, Ernest is forced to face what he and his family have been running from, The Everything That Happened. Only by working together will they find Beatrice, belonging, and the parts of themselves they've lost.

A typewriter & an introverted boy are trying to find out what happened to the boy's missing mother. It has serious "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" vibes, but without the humor. I thought it was sweet & loved the theme of not assuming you know what's happening inside someone else's head. Grief & pain can elicit such different reactions from people. The various reactions shown by the family felt so real to me. I loved the story & the typewriter's POV.

I was not anticipating this #MiddleGrade to be as sad as it was in parts - the cover and synopsis made me think it would be more light and comical. Magical realism plays a role in this as the reader hears from the perspective of tween Ernest and Olivetti the typewriter. It‘s apparent early on that there is a big #ElephantInTheRoom when it comes to Ernest‘s family, and the mother‘s disappearance only adds layers to the situation. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ I would have liked to hear Beatrice‘s voice in this, but that‘s really my only concern. This is a book that looks at illness, grief, hope, loneliness, despair, and family. I needed tissues! #BBRC @LibrarianRyan 6mo

Librarybelle @mcctrish Yes! Honestly, that‘s why I wanted to read this…pulled in by the cover! 6mo
LibrarianRyan I would never have guessed middle grade by the cover. The book sounds interesting though. And on another note. What is it with typewritters in books lately? It's like they are some new fangled invention. 5mo
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Yes! The cover is a bit deceiving. But, how odd that typewriters have a focus. I would imagine most middle grade students have no idea what a typewriter is. 5mo

The cover is BEAUTIFUL, but to be quite honest, I needed more daily thoughts, more voice from the typewriter. The premise is so smart, but for me, the execution was lacking. I also would‘ve loved some chapters from the mom‘s perspective because I have some questions…

Allyneedsbooks I LOVE THIS cover !!!! ❤️ 7mo

Olivetti is marketed as a children‘s book and I get why, but it‘s a delightful read for anyone who loves typewriters, a bit of adventure, and the stories we tell. A boy‘s mother is missing. Her Olivetti was the last one to see her before she disappeared.

This middle grade fiction debut told from the dual POV of a sentient typewriter and a 12-year-old introvert was enticing to me. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#olivetti

Publication is expected March 26.
