The Winter Room | Gary Paulsen
2 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
This Newbery Honor Book by master storyteller Gary Paulsen is now available in this After Words paperback edition! Following the turn of the seasons, eleven year old Eldon traces the daily routines of his life on a farm and his relationship with his older brother Wayne. During the winter, with little work to be done on the farm, Eldon and Wayne spend the quiet hours with their family, listening to their Uncle David's stories. But Eldon soon learns that, although he has lived on the same farm, in the same house with his uncle for eleven springs, summers, and winters, he hardly knows him.

Gary Paulsen has a constant theme throughout a majority of his books which is the outdoors and wilderness lifestyle. The Winter Room is another example of amazing writing by an excellent author and it‘s a story of a family and two brothers who begin to learn about their own family and the realize that not everything is what it seems...

Emma_Barcena The text's genre is RF. This is a Newbery Honor Award winning book. This book would be good for an IR. This resource can be used if student's wish to listen to an excerpt of the book prior to reading it independently to see if they would enjoy it.

Emma_Barcena The UDL Principles 1.2 & 4.2 can be used to offer students alternatives for auditory information and to optimize access to tools and assistive technologies. The EL Principles 21 & 46 can be used with the UDL Principles by recording recording lectures, presentations and stories for new students who have limited English exposure, and use discovery learning activities. #UCFLAE3414su20 4y
ashleyshugars Emma, you are so great at grabbing people‘s attention! I want to read this book too, lol! Also like your strategies which talk about recording lectures. I have always thought this is a great strategy to use for ELL‘s in the classroom as they can rewatch lessons and go back on things they may have struggled to understand. Great job!! 4y
DrSpalding Independent reading is a fine option. We need books we can offer students to read and enjoy on their own. Newbery award winners are excellent choices. (edited) 4y
