FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE ADVERSARY One morning, a man shaves off his long-worn moustache, hoping to amuse his wife and friends. But when nobody notices, or pretends not to have noticed, what started out as a simple trick turns to terror. As doubt and denial bristle, and every aspect of his life threatens to topple into madness a disturbing solution comes into view, taking us on a dramatic flight across the world. Translated by Lanie Goodman Elegant, pocket-sized paperbacks, VINTAGE Editions celebrate the audacity and ambition of the written word, transporting readers to wherever in the world literary innovation may be found.

When a man shaves off his moustache, the people around him react as if the moustache had never been there, leaving the man in great confusion. Are his wife and friends fooling him? What starts out as a joke, quickly turns into something much darker. Are his friends plotting against him? What is illusion and reality?
An impactful little book about identity and a mental breakdown. A typical Emmanuel Carrère book.

#WeeklyForecast

I am almost finished with A Crack in the Wall and will continue with Blue Sisters. After that, the tagged one and after that I am not sure. I will probably read more because I am off work from Thursday on, but am still changing the books I want to take with me to France, where we‘ll spend Christmas. To be continued!

4/5 ?

What begins as a light-hearted and humorous story quickly descends into a crazy roller coaster nightmare in Emmanuel Carrère's "The Moustache." The protagonist shaves his long-worn moustache, expecting playful reactions from his wife and friends, but no one acknowledges the change. This simple act puts his entire life and identity into question, illustrating the thin line between sanity and insanity. A memorable and gripping read.

Tamra What a terrific premise! 7mo
