Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass | Ramin Setoodeh
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
From the editor in chief of Variety and author of the New York Times bestseller Ladies Who Punch, the never-fully-told, behind-the-scenes story of Donald Trump and The Apprentice, the long-running reality series that catapulted him to the White House. Here for the first time is the definitive untold story of Donald Trump’s years as a reality TV star. Trump himself admits he might not have been president without The Apprentice. Now, just as he uncovered the chaos inside the daytime favorite The View in his bestselling Ladies Who Punch, Ramin Setoodeh chronicles Trump’s dramatic tenure as New York’s ultimate boss in the boardroom, a mirage created by Survivor producer Mark Burnett and NBC boss Jeff Zucker. With unprecedented access, including hours of interviews with Trump, his boardroom advisers George Ross and Carolyn Kepcher, Eric Trump, and some of the most memorable contestants, and writing with flair and authority, Setoodeh shares all the untold tales from this legendary show that has left its mark on popular culture, shaped the legend of its star, and ultimately changed American history.

This was a fast and enjoyable read that took me back to simpler times. I liked the Apprentice when it first came out and was at least indifferent to Trump or even kind of liked him for when he‘d show up and say ridiculous things on the Late Show and always laughed at how he‘d slap his name on everything. This is a fun behind the scenes of how the Apprentice came to be and how the show helped propel him to the presidency. #bookspinbingo

Part Donald Trump origin story and part behind- the- scenes on The Apprentice. Despite giving 6 interviews, Trump talked almost 100% of the time about the show instead of about being president. But perhaps that‘s because the interviewer is from Variety. Worth a read but only if you are interested in Hollywood too.

How was Trump ever elected? Setoodeh covered The Apprentice for Newsweek when it aired. Now, he‘s the editor of Variety. He sat with Trump several times post-2020 election, and Trump gladly relived his glory days on TV. It would be funnier if it were fiction! He also spoke to many past contestants, most of whom continue to have favorable opinions of Trump. An interesting, enlightening, and scary book.

DGRachel I am still dumbfounded by his election and the people who I know that voted for him. I had one acquaintance who said something like he wasn‘t perfect, but was better than Clinton and swore she‘d call out his bad behavior once elected. She was dead silent for four years. 5mo
Megabooks @DGRachel I had a couple of people in my life like that. They were either horrified or joined QAnon. 5mo
bthegood @Megabooks same here - it seems there is no middle ground there. 5mo
Megabooks @bthegood there isn‘t. I miss a bit of sanity and decorum in politics. We‘ve reached a sad point as a country. 5mo
bthegood @Megabooks agreed 😔 hopefully we will get to a turning point in the next few years - 5mo
