Blood on the Tracks
Blood on the Tracks | Barbara Nickless
A young woman is found brutally murdered, and the main suspect is the victim s fiance, a hideously scarred Iraq War vet known as the Burned Man. But railroad police Special Agent Sydney Rose Parnell, brought in by the Denver Major Crimes unit to help investigate, can't shake the feeling that larger forces are behind this apparent crime of passion. In the depths of an icy winter, Parnell and her K9 partner, Clyde?both haunted by their time in Iraq?descend into the underground world of a savage gang of rail riders. There, they uncover a wide-reaching conspiracy and a series of shocking crimes. Crimes that threaten everything Parnell holds dear. As the search for the truth puts her directly in the path of the killer, Parnell must struggle with a deadly question: Can she fight monsters without becoming one herself?"

You always need a flawed detective. That is just part of the genre. Sometimes it is really plastic, or over-the-top. But I felt Nickless nailed it. Sydney Parnell's flaws worked really well. I bought into 95% of this story. A couple of scenes stuck out as a little off in the story as a whole, but I loved it.

Listening to this one while I finally finish up the shredding. It‘s another kindle unlimited find, plus it has audio, and it‘s really really good. The writing is poetic and the characters are interesting. Looking forward to being done with work for the day so I can read more.

Picked this book up as my free kindle prime selection for the month. I love when a book gets you hooked from the beginning. The main character, Sydney, is trying to survive being home after being away at war. She dealt with the dead and they stay with her. If you like books that have just as much personal struggle as mystery, then check this one out.
