The Stone Carvers
The Stone Carvers | Jane Urquhart
10 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
Set in the first half of the twentieth century, but reaching back to Bavaria in the late nineteenth century, The Stone Carvers weaves together the story of ordinary lives marked by obsession and transformed by art. At the centre of a large cast of characters is Klara Becker, the granddaughter of a master carver, a seamstress haunted by a love affair cut short by the First World War, and by the frequent disappearances of her brother Tilman, afflicted since childhood with wanderlust. From Ontario, they are swept into a colossal venture in Europe years later, as Toronto sculptor Walter Allwards ambitious plans begin to take shape for a war memorial at Vimy, France. Spanning three decades, and moving from a German-settled village in Ontario to Europe after the Great War, The Stone Carvers follows the paths of immigrants, labourers, and dreamers. Vivid, dark, redemptive, this is novel of great beauty and power. From the Hardcover edition.

It's rare for a work of fiction to explore the satisfaction of work. In The Stone Carvers Urquhart explores how a woman can find satisfaction through her work. It's a beautiful work.

Mehso-so

This was... Not what I was expecting. While I appreciated the unfamiliar subject matter (Canadians in WWI) I somehow led myself to believe it would be more about the woman left behind, rather than her damaged brother, but it wasn't really. Just...meh. #litsyatoz #S #brrhchallenge #bookaboutwar

In her youth Klara lives in Ontario and loses her brother (who disappears one day when she is young) and her lover Eamon (to a war far from home, WWI). After this, she stays alone, keeps to herself and tries to forget about her feelings.

I cannot tell you how she ends up as a stone carver in France without giving away too much of the story, but it is a moving story, beautifully written and one to cherish. #Booker #manbooker
