Witch of the Woods
Witch of the Woods | Zetta Elliott
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
In a world much like our own, outside a city cloaked in smog, an adventurous girl slips away from home. Shedding her protective mask, she finds comfort in the shadowy forest and momentarily forgets about her sick sibling and anxious parents. They have warned her against going into the woods, which are supposedly guarded by a ravenous witch. One day, a wise old woman appears and warns the girl against disturbing a dead bird lying on the forest floor. Instead of fleeing from the legendary Witch of the Woods, the girl follows her home and finds that the crone has started a seed bank in an old sewage tunnel. With one magical seed, the crone opens the girl's eyes to the wondrous biodiversity that once made the forest thrive.

4.5 ⭐This is probably one of the most unique picture books I‘ve ever read. When the very first illustrations are of a little girl in a gas mask all expectations go out the window. This book feels like a dystopian future but could very much be now. A young girl has a baby sibling who is not breathing well and needs lots of attention, so she goes off to play. She wanders the woods and finds the witch who explains about the cycle of life.

LibrarianRyan This book feels like a story you would study in literature class but written for grade three and four. The illustrations are unique and interesting but fit the story well. 1mo
