Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day | Joel Selvin
11 posts | 9 read | 10 to read
In this breathtaking cultural history filled with exclusive, never-before-revealed details, celebrated rock journalist Joel Selvin tells the definitive story of the Rolling Stones infamous Altamont concert in San Francisco, the disastrous historic event that marked the end of the idealistic 1960s. In the annals of rock history, the Altamont Speedway Free Festival on December 6, 1969, has long been seen as the distorted twin of Woodstockthe day that shattered the Sixties promise of peace and love when a concertgoer was killed by a member of the Hells Angels, the notorious biker club acting as security. While most people know of the events from the film Gimme Shelter, the whole story has remained buried in varied accounts, rumor, and mythuntil now. Altamont explores rocks darkest day, a fiasco that began well before the climactic death of Meredith Hunter and continued beyond that infamous December night. Joel Selvin probes every aspect of the showfrom the Stones hastily planned tour preceding the concert to the bad acid that swept through the audience to other deaths that also occurred that eveningto capture the full scope of the tragedy and its aftermath. He also provides an in-depth look at the Grateful Deads role in the events leading to Altamont, examining the bands behind-the-scenes presence in both arranging the show and hiring the Hells Angels as security. The product of twenty years of exhaustive research and dozens of interviews with many key players, including medical staff, Hells Angels members, the stage crew, and the musicians who were there, and featuring sixteen pages of color photos, Altamont is the ultimate account of the final event in rocks formative and most turbulent decade.

This book has no notes, so it‘s impossible to check his references in the alleged bibliography and no way to tell which quotes came from which of the new interviews the author claims to have conducted. Therefore it‘s impossible to know whether one has learned anything new or correct or interesting. Deeply disappointing. One quarter of a star for the photos.

Fascinating, heartbreaking, upsetting read. I‘m really digging pop music histories lately. This is meticulously researched telling of the Rolling Stones‘s disastrous rock festival at Altamont where four people died, including one murder near the stage during the show. Must-read for rock fans and those interested in the 1960s music scene.

Nothing says holiday cheer like a healthy dose of sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll! Altamont marked the end of the 60s in more ways than one. More than just a story of a rock concert, Joel Slevin delves into the ways our entertainment culture mirrors...and sometimes tells the future of our social reality. #altamont #joelslevin #2016giftguide

This was a detailed and well researched book about a true disaster in rock and roll culture. Altamont was a train wreck with deadly consequences, and this book tells all angles and sides. An upsetting but interesting read!

Also finished this. Once I stopped trying to keep all the players straight, this turned out to be a riveting look at the 1969 free concert at the Altamont Speedway.

This is really good so far but for some reason I'm having a hard time keeping track of people. A book about a rock concert should not be causing me this much brain strain😜
