An insanely competitive housing market. A desperate buyer on the edge. In Marisa Kashino's darkly hilarious debut novel, Best Offer Wins, the white picket fence becomes the ultimate symbol of success--and obsession. How far would you go for the house of your dreams? Eighteen months and 11 lost bidding wars into house-hunting in the overheated Washington, DC suburbs, 37-year-old publicist Margo Miyake gets a tip about the perfect house, in the perfect neighborhood, slated to come up for sale in one month. Desperate to escape the cramped apartment she shares with her husband Ian -- and in turn, get their marriage, plan to have a baby, and whole life back on track -- Margo becomes obsessed with buying the house before it's publicly listed and the masses descend (with unbeatable, all-cash offers in hand). A little stalking? Harmless. A bit of trespassing? Necessary. As Margo infiltrates the homeowners' lives, her tactics grow increasingly unhinged--but just when she thinks she's won them over, she hits a snag in her plan. Undeterred, Margo will prove again and again that there's no boundary she won't cross to seize the dream life she's been chasing. The most unsettling part? You'll root for her, even as you gasp in disbelief. Dark, biting, and laugh-out-loud funny, Best Offer Wins is a propulsive debut and a razor-sharp exploration of class, ambition, and the modern housing crisis.

A soft pic for me - I didn‘t love the first quarter of the book, because I hated the MC so much. I continued to hate her throughout, but her psychosis grew on me 😆 (1)

This book sucked me in and left me saying, "That heifer's crazy and her husband is stupid!" From house hunting to committing serious crimes in the blink of an eye, there were some twists I didn't see coming. It is an easy, fun read and I definitely recommend it.

A zippy little thriller for my first audiobook of the year! To Margo, the FMC, securing the perfect house symbolizes status, worthiness, happiness, and all her hopes and dreams. No pressure! She‘s also totally unhinged, which made this book a blast. Twisted and dark, but fun nonetheless! 🎧

This was a quick read, and one I‘d recommend to people looking for a thriller for sure! That being said, I was primarily invested in the fate of Fritter the dog and I‘m not sure that was the author‘s intent.

Despite the narrator‘s child voice for the kid character being a little high-pitched for my liking, I really liked this one. A snarky ‘how far will she go?‘ about a woman wanting to get her dream house in a ultra-competitive housing market. I thought it was great, and I‘ll be looking forward to what the author writes next.

The thoughts in Margo‘s head are spit-take funny. What‘s required of first time homebuyers ascertaining a home in their chosen neighborhood is a great setup for a novel. Homebuyers Margo & Ian and sellers Jake & Curt are interestingly drawn. I wish the story stayed inside the Margo/Curt blackmail. She went off the rails and became more psychopath than funny. A slower pick than I expected as I was half-way in.

Such a fun debut!! Narrator Margo may not be a good person (her house hunting has really brought out the worst in her), but she‘s a pretty funny dog lover who will stop at literally nothing to get the dream home she desires. For the last 18 months, she & her equally not-so perfect husband, Ian, have been trying for a baby & to lock in their perfect house. But after 10 times being outbid, Margo‘s ready to go all in on a tip about a new listing!

TorieStorieS @Ruthiella @dabbe A fun throw back picture repurposed for this one…. I thought more of our dream house would show up, haha— but who could crop a puppy pic?! Not me! 🤣 1mo

Highly recommend! I heard lots of hype about this book over the summer at my NYU Publishing Institute, and it didn‘t disappoint. The audio narration is especially expressive and satisfying hearing the inner workings of this semi-deranged MC‘s mind. I‘ve never looked to buy a house, so I can‘t relate, but I‘m sure it‘d be even better if you shared that angst. Thanks to Libro for early access!!
