Hello #SheSaid!

I got through the intro & started Chapter one. Sorry, I did not realize the introduction was a long chapter in and of itself…bad planning on my part.

Join in as you catch up (like me)! I‘m really enjoying this one so far….lots of thoughts…see you in the comments!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Anyone read this and think of recent comments about childless cat ladies by US political people. 😳 I did! (edited) 2mo

vlwelser I totally thought about the childless cat ladies. I was actually worried in the intro that she might get into religious topics but so far it seems normal. The French perspective is interesting. 2mo
CatLass007 I am a proud childless catlady! I definitely thought of #45‘s running mate when I heard that section. I was expecting a little more historical and a little less about modern day witches. But this is not a complaint. The author mentioned a slave who was accused of witchcraft in Salem named Tituba and I found several books about her on Audible. I probably should see if they‘re available thru my library. I‘m listening to the audiobook and (cont)⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 I want to go back and listen again. I was in elementary school when feminists began pushing for the use of Ms. instead of Miss or Mrs. In the South, however, women have been referred to as Miz for centuries. I liked Ms. for several decades but as I get older I notice that more people call me Mrs. and I always correct them and say “It‘s Miss.” I like my singleness and want it acknowledged. Am I socially regressing? I don‘t think so. I‘m (cont)⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 just being myself. @vlwelser I‘m also appreciative of the French perspective. For non fiction we mostly get the British or American perspective. Nice change. 1mo
DebinHawaii My thoughts also went right to childless cat lady comments. Like @CatLass007 I am a proud one too! It!s interesting so far. 1mo
CatLass007 @DebinHawaii There‘s no better combination than cats and books. 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CatLass007 & @DebinHawaii How did she say it…any women independent, on her own, and not under the control of a man! We are dangerous! Apparently dangerous in with hunting times and to dangerous to vote according to some today 🤪 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa This quote also made me think of someone who says it a lot: “The phrase “witch-hunt” is a curiously loaded one; deployed nowadays, the speaker is almost certainly using it incorrectly and acting in bad faith (and would unquestionably minimize witch-hunts as historic fact).” 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And this one…you can tell it‘s political season in the US 😂 “The political enemies of certain high-born figures would occasionally denounce the latter‘s daughters or wives as witches; this was easier than attacking their enemies directly. However, the great majority of victims belonged to the lower classes.” 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I did find it both interesting and sadly not surprising how much of the reasoning was still relevant today. The blaming the victim, that if she accused you of anything bad/illegal disregard her, she‘s obviously a witch trying to ruin my good name, to even the researchers who discussed it being a war on women (with an occasional man pulled in) and the others piping up, “not just women, men too!” 1mo

I haven't read a Lesley Pearse book in quite awhile, I had forgotten how good they are. I really enjoyed this book while walking

Emily Henry may be a master of writing fluffy novels that aren't, in fact, just fluffy novels at all. I loved this, even though sometimes it was hard to keep track of where we were in the timeline. #45-2024

A very interesting take on the effect humans have on nature, set in 2042. The concept of nature fighting back in the form of “tree people” who live beyond the veil in an expansive cave system below ground is fascinating. The writing is slow, but the plot keeps moving. Book #45 in 2024

Thanks, @Kar2b for my first birthday card! As a gift to myself, I‘ve decided to dive into nostalgia and re-read the entire Sweet Valley series! The last time I decided to do this, I fell off at 31 in the SVK series, so hopefully this time I make it through more— especially since I‘ve been collecting the ones that I didn‘t have so I am in for some new reads too! This seventh birthday is fun—& the chocolate cake with marshmallow icing sounds yummy!

Ruthiella Happy birthday! 🥳🥳🥳 8mo
TorieStorieS @Ruth Thank you!! 😊 8mo

Kar2b My cousins had the Sweet Valley High series, so I always borrowed their books to read them. Happy Birthday! 8mo
TorieStorieS @Kar2b Thanks!! Some of my SVH books are hand-me-downs from my cousin, actually! 🤣 8mo
JenlovesJT47 I just finally finished my read through of the entire SVH series last year and now I‘m on to SVH Senior Year. I‘ve only read a couple of the SVK books when I was younger but I might give them a whirl. Have you read any of the new SVT graphic novels? I am really enjoying them so far. ❤️ 4mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I‘m still missing #45 of the senior year series— hopefully by the time I get there, I‘ll have tracked it down! I have been collecting the new graphic novels but haven‘t read them yet…. I will probably read them after reading the regular SVT books! I‘m glad to hear good things about them! I was a little nervous considering how awful the Sweet Valley Confidential book was! 4mo
JenlovesJT47 I own the SVHSY series up to book 35 plus the last one, 48, so I‘ll have to track the rest of them down also once I get to that point. I‘ll keep an eye out for both of us! The graphic novels are good. I really enjoy the artwork and they do a good job of modernizing it without drastically changing the storyline or characters. Yeah, SV Confidential was SO bad but I love the Sweet Life series that takes place after it. Not Pulitzer material for ⬇️ 4mo
JenlovesJT47 Sure but a fun an enjoyable read. I‘ll let you know if I come across #45! 🤓 4mo
JenlovesJT47 Geez I just looked it up and the cheapest you can find it is $45! Kicking myself for not continuing to buy the series when they were still coming out. (edited) 4mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I really liked the Sweet Life, too! I stayed up until midnight on the release days to read them on my kindle, hahaha! 4mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 And I know!! I can‘t bring myself to pay $45 for a book that originally cost like $3!! The real craziest prices are for the last books of The Unicorn Club series! I think the last one is going for $160!! I‘m missing 20-23! I will keep an eye out for the end of the SVHSY series for you, too! I have gotten lucky at the used bookstore by my mom‘s house and occasionally at our local Half Price Books! 4mo
JenlovesJT47 Wow that‘s crazy. I have most of the Unicorn Club books, can‘t remember off the top of my head which ones I‘m missing, but I‘ll keep an eye out! There are a couple of used bookstores close by and I might hit them up this weekend. 4mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I have a dentist appointment not too far from the bookstore this afternoon! I‘ll pop in there on my way home! 4mo

Love sliding back into the world of the Winchesters. I miss them but don't want to revisit too often. Thank goodness I didn't devour this book series immediately as they came out, so it gives me an easier option to look in on the boys once in a while. #45-2023

Romantic Comedy | Curtis Sittenfeld

I just started this selection for #CampLitsy23 and I had a really difficult time during the author‘s description of election night 2016. It is seriously anxiety-inducing to think about #45‘s occupation of the Oval Office. Or the possibility that it could happen again.

Suet624 The idea is so frightening. 1y
CatLass007 @Suet624 Terrifying. 1y
