By the Light of My Father's Smile
By the Light of My Father's Smile: A Novel | Alice Walker
8 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
A family from the United States goes to the remote Sierras in Mexico--Susannah, the writer-to-be; her sister, Magdalena; and their father and mother. There, amid an endangered band of mixed-race blacks and Indians called the Mundo, they begin an encounter that will change them more than they could ever dream. Moving back and forth in time, and among unforgettable characters and their magical stories, Walker brilliantly explores the ways in which a woman's denied sexuality leads to the loss of the much prized and necessary original self--and how she regains that self, even as her family's past of lies and love is transformed. . . .

Decided to re-read this before donating - so glad I did as I now know I don't want to part with it. Just wow - what a book! I remember loving it the first time just not why. It really is so moving, profound, powerful, empowering. It is to do with female sexuality as essential to a whole self but also father/daughter relationships and it's that aspect that really hit home for me. The women in it are tragic, inspirational... cont. in comments

readingjedi ...fierce, funny, strong, independent of mind & spirit - it's a great feminist read. I found it full of joy - despite most of the characters being dead! - and hugely uplifting. There were also moments of poignancy that brought me to tears of grief and empathy. I look forward to my daughter reading it. 6y
readingjedi Saddened to read of the author's support for a book that features Holocaust denial - not cool 😡 6y

Re-reading this one before I donate it. First read it, gosh, maybe 17 or 18 years ago so I can't really remember it at all. I remember being moved by it and recommending it at the time so I'm hoping it hasn't lost any of its power in the intervening years.

Interesting fact! This is the first physical book I've read all year. When I opened it I was kinda frustrated by how gloomy the pages were 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

ShananigansReads I‘ve only read one this year also and it‘s taking forever because I don‘t like to hold it. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ 6y

This was a "Blind Date with a Book" that I picked up a couple months ago based on a really short, vague description. The book was wrapped, so I had no idea what was waiting for me when I unwrapped it at 5 a.m. this morning. This was a really good read & beautifully written. I've never been disappointed by an Alice Walker book, and this book was no exception. #readathon
