The Rose Field: The Book of Dust | Philip Pullman, Patricia Pushlady

I am distraught. This did not work. The book is, quite simply, uncooked. Needed several more revisions with a strong editor. I don't think this book falling flat damages the His Dark Materials legacy, but I do think as HDM lives on The Book of Dust is likely to go largely unread.

I have waited eagerly for this book for a long time and have mixed feelings about the ending. I think it's a very intriguing and enticing series but feel that Pullman has changed his style a bit in this last one. Now he's rather more direct with his social commentary, and I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the way he wrapped up the numerous character arcs and other ideas if this really is the end. I still have questions! ⬇️

jitteryjane724 I think this Goodreads review by Yona states everything I would like to say, but more more eloquently than I can at the moment. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/228587642-the-rose-field 1w

My last book of 2025 and I loved it. It's long and I let myself take my time, rather than rushing to the end. I think there's still a companion novella (or two?) that I haven't read, but I can see myself rereading this series many times. There's a lot of discourse lately about the "dumbing down" of media, and this felt like the exact opposite.

Clare-Dragonfly Oh yes, I agree. 1w
jitteryjane724 Hi! I just finished this book as well. I'm curious, do you feel like you have all the closure you need from the ending? 1w
lauraisntwilder @jitteryjane724 I did, yes. Even though we don't know definitely what will happen to Lyra, we know that she's going to be okay, that she's on the right track. She starts The Secret Commonwealth a sort of bratty, cynical know-it-all and ends this one with a new sense of wonder and a feeling of hope. Admittedly, I like ambiguous endings, but Lyra's character development was strong and I enjoyed that. 1w
jitteryjane724 @lauraisntwilder I'd agree with your description of her transformation! That's true and also very hopeful for her, and I'm happy for her in that regard. 7d

There was a big enough gap between the second book and this one that I wondered if it was ever coming.

I love this series. This one is long, and some of the political parts felt too long, but I was glad to see more of Lyra and Pantalaimon. I thought it wrapped up pretty well.

Jess861 I read the His Dark Material trilogy way back but I didn't realize he did a Book of Dust series - I'm going to have to check this out! 3w
Soubhiville @jess861 the first in this trilogy is the prequel to His Dark Materials, the other two are sequels. 🙂 3w

My brain is still swimming with all the thoughts and ideas and confusion in this book…Philip Pullman is such an intense, evocative writer, and this book is no exception. Following Lyra and Pan as they explore the meaning and the limits of human consciousness is a worthwhile journey for all who ponder existence. I still have questions but maybe that‘s the point, maybe we need to keep questioning and wondering and imagining to keep being human.

Complete!
I'm going to have to reread the second trilogy over to really get it. But I'm very happy with love interest for Lyra, let's leave it at that

TrishB @tina_b.ooks I love the whole series, you have to start with Northern Lights - which is the beginning of the whole series. Is it that one? 2mo
tina_b.ooks @TrishB I read Northern Lights. I actually have the collection of His Dark Materials and then also the first volume of Book of Dust, but I never continued. 2mo
