Words, Wisconsin, an anonymous town of only a few hundred people. But under its sleepy surface, life rages. Cora and Graham guard their dairy farm, and family, from the wicked schemes of their milk co-op. Lifelong paraplegic Olivia suddenly starts to walk, only to find herself crippled by her fury toward her sister and caretaker, Violet. Recently retired Rusty finds a cougar living in his haymow, dredging up haunting childhood memories. Winifred becomes pastor of the Friends church and stumbles on enlightenment in a very unlikely place. And July Montgomery, both private and gregarious, instigates a series of events that threatens the town's solitude and doggedly suspicious ways.

Mehso-so

There is a lot of solid writing in this book! It reminds me of Wallace Stegner, Ivan Doig, Larry Watson in that it is evocative of a distinctly American space & time.

So-so rating because first, there is a dog fighting chapter and Rhodes tries to write a sympathetic participant. Second, there is an entirely implausible event/plot line 3/4 of the way in which completely lost my buy-in.

I live in the driftless region of the US. 😊

"To get to Words you must first find where Hwy 47 and County Trunk Q intersect, at a high, lonely place surrounded by alfalfa, corn, and soybean fields. . . . He had come here, he knew then, as a last stand -- to either become in some way connected to other people or to die. He could no longer live as a hungry ghost." RealLifeReading I've not heard of Driftless before. Thanks! 8y
DrexEdit Love Driftless! He has a second book out set in the same community, slightly different quirky characters. 8y
lynneamch Ooh. Thanks @DrexEdit . Rhodes own life story is interesting, too. So glad he found his way back to writing. May have to read his earlier stuff sometime. 8y
