"Profound and moving and real."--Andrew Sean Greer"Some Bright Nowhere is a novel that draws you in deeply and holds you there. Wonderful."--Meg WolitzerThe bestselling, beloved author returns with her first novel in over a decade, an intimate and profoundly moving look at a long marriage and the ways in which a startling request can change a couple's understanding of who they are, together and apart.Eliot and his wife Claire have been happily married for nearly four decades. They've raised two children in their sleepy Connecticut town and have weathered the inevitable ups and downs of a long life spent together. But eight years after Claire was diagnosed with cancer, the end is near, and it's time to gather loved ones and prepare for the inevitable.Over the years of Claire's illness, Eliot has willingly--lovingly--shifted into the role of caregiver, appreciating the intimacy and tenderness that comes with a role even more layered and complex than the one he performed as a devoted husband. But as he focuses on settling into what will be their last days and weeks together, Claire makes an unexpected request that leaves him reeling. In a moment, his carefully constructed world is shattered. What if your partner's dying wish broke your heart? How well do we know the deepest desires of those we love dearly? As Eliot is confronted with this profound turning point in his marriage and his life, he grapples with the man and husband he's been, and with the great unknowns of Claire's last days.Ann Packer makes a triumphant return with this powerful novel that is tender and raw, visceral and unexpected. Emotionally vibrant and complex, Some Bright Nowhere explores the profound gifts and unexpected costs of truly loving someone, and the fears and desires we experience as the end of life draws near.

This is a complicated book. On one hand, it‘s engaging, thought provoking, empowering to choose how to die; on the other hand, it‘s a dysfunctional family on full display with characters who I was never sure I fully liked. I read it quickly, but I was frustrated by events/characters, which might show a great book- one that pulls you in to feel strong emotions.

Over 10 years I moved through the cancer deaths of my father, brother, oldest sister, and a best friend. My brother had two lengthy remissions but when cancer returned a 3rd time it was fast and fatal. He explained in his final days (with endless love for us) dying had to be selfish as he could not do it on anyone else‘s terms. That is a lesson I‘ve carried with me for 15 years, and this book reminds me to respect that lesson.

do-re-mi I'm so sorry for all your family has been through, and yourself. 🌸 3w

marleed @do-re-mi @AmyG @AnnCrystal @Dilara @Lesliereadsalot Oh thank you so much. I didn‘t really intend to make this post about me. This book really brought to mind my conversation with Robin and how he explained how his imminent death had to be handled his way. It was such a beautiful lesson and I think this book is about that lesson, as well. 3w

Once again, how has no one reviewed this book? Narrated by a husband whose dying wife decides she wants to spend whatever time she has left in the company of her two best girlfriends, not him. Entirely told through his point of view, we feel his pain, his questions, his desire for answers that are not coming. This is the third book I‘ve read lately about someone dying, and each one has brought me closer to thinking about end of life.

BarbaraBB That sounds so sad. But it is good I guess? 4w
Ruthiella That‘s what is so great about platforms like Litsy-it brings these lesser known titles to our attention. 👍 3w
Lesliereadsalot @Ruthiella You are so right!🩷 3w
Lesliereadsalot @BarbaraBB Each of the books about characters dying have their own perspective so it‘s really a lot to think about. This was the least sad of the 3, no tears. It could be that the characters were just not as likeable. Still I would recommend. 3w
