Middle grade read. After the loss of her middle sister and Mother, Sol's Dad remarries and moves her and her littlest sister to the US. Then he returns to the Philippines, leaving behind the girls to contend with their step mom, grief, and finding support in unlikely places. Enjoyable read about the bonds of sisters.

I ate an entire bag of takis while reading this book. It is best paired with a spicy snack on a sleepy afternoon.

I love how the cover page shows the two sisters under a fort type illustration and the use of “light”.

This story is realistic in the sense that it involves hardships. Sol lost her father and is trying to live her life with her sister without him anymore. This book is a story of adventure and hope. The topic may be controversial in the way the issues she faces aren't extremely common in the everyday child, but also a good lesson for children to understand the way other people's lives may be.

Contemporary realistic fiction. I think this is a wonderful story for older children to read. It‘s real and has moments for anyone to relate to, even if they aren‘t immigrants or don‘t have siblings. It‘s a perfect example of contemporary realistic fiction and portrays very strong female characters. I would love to continue reading this book.

The Land of Forgotten Girls by Erin Entrada Kelly, 2016. This is a wonderful story about the strength of two sisters and the bod they form. Despite their differences in age they rely on each other and help each other survive their new lives in the states with only their horrible stepmother caring for them. This story is real and strong and really proves the tag line: Sometimes all you need is your sister.

A sad but still hopeful middle-grade novel about two young girls who move to the US from the Philippines with their stepmother and their dad, who soon returns to his homeland, leaving the girls w their angry and abusive stepmother. 12yo Sol is defiant, independent and a fierce defender of her sister, and she‘s a wonderful storyteller who uses fantasy to escape her bleak reality.

After their dad went back to the Philippines, sisters Sol and Ming are stuck with their evil stepmother. So Sol tells her sister stories to help them escape, if only in their imaginations. But what happens when the line between truth and fiction blurs?

A sweet, quick middle-grade read.

My mother once told me that sisters were bound by invisible ribbons, Andy's ribbons held them together until the end of time, no matter what.
