Brave Girl Eating
Brave Girl Eating: A Family's Struggle with Anorexia | Harriet Brown
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Ive never had anorexia, but I know it well. I see it on the street, in the gaunt and sunken face, the bony chest, the spindly arms of an emaciated woman. Ive come to recognize the flat look of despair, the hopelessness that follows, inevitably, from years of starvation. I think: That could have been my daughter. It wasnt. Its not. If I have anything to say about it, it wont be. In this emotionally resonant and compelling memoir, journalist and professor Harriet Brown takes readersmoment by moment, spoonful by spoonfulthrough her familys experience with the nightmare of anorexia. A guiding light for anyone touched by this devastating disease, Brave Girl Eating is essential reading for families and professionals alike.

It's odd, maybe, that I finished this in the waiting room of the hospital where this journey started for us. We're just getting started. I found this book insightful, hopeful, inspiring, and a little frightening. Not only was Kitty brave with each bite of food, so was her family that squarely faced the demon of anorexia. Beautiful read.

So, this isn't a book I would ever have thought I needed or wanted to read. Yet, here I am facing the same struggles with my 12 year old daughter. Praying I pick up some good advice and tips as we walk thru this darkness. (FYI, we are in therapy, too.)
