NASA discovered the alien ship lurking in the asteroid belt in the 1960s. They kept the Target under intense surveillance for decades, letting the public believe they were exploring the solar system, while they worked feverishly to refine the technology needed to reach it. The ship itself remained silent, drifting. Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, its an adventure she cant refuse. The ship isnt vacant, as they presumed. A disembodied voice rumbles inside Janes head, "You are home." Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien wants from her. As the derelict ship devolves into chaos and the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the aliens help to survive. *This is the bestselling novel in its original form. Mehso-so

I kept thinking of “Arrival“ for the first couple of chapters but came to appreciate it more on its own terms afterwards. I was starting to get irritated about how much of the action rewound because whoops, this was just a virtual reality test by Ei'Brai while a character was in the healing pods. I will read the next one and see how it goes now that Jane and Ei'Brai's partnership has been cemented but I don't know if I will continue after that.

Couldn't resist picking up this freebie. A first in a series about a linguist in space? #pricedrop

rabbitprincess Intriguing! Hope it's good 😄 5y
NotCool A linguist in space? Hmm...Have you ever read any of CJ Cherryh‘s Foreigner Series? 5y
esurient @notcool No! But I have read some of her Alliance-Union and Chanur novels, so I'll add them to my list. I have read Chiang's 'Story of Your Life', which has done a lot to spark my interest on this topic. 5y

Jane Holloway is a linguist and part of a small NASA group sent to explore a large space ship parked in the asteroid belt since 1960. The ship is apparently abandoned but the lights turn on as they dock. Jane begins to have contact with a presence on the ship. There is really cool science, icky space creatures, battles, and a little sex. The suspense lasts to the end. Great plot. I bought book 2 immediately on finishing. A must read for scifi fans

Original kick-ass sci fi novel that has deep and believable characters. Wells really sets the stage to turn this into a series that can climb the ranks into one of sci-fi's greatest.
