Bailedbailed

Oh no, I remember this one! I tried reading it once before. Bailed at pg. 1.

esurient Poor book is trying so damned hard to be immersive and exciting to catch readers, and it's so stereotypically YA it makes my eyes hurt. I didn't like the writing style (overwrought and without nuance); zero of the author's enthusiasm transferred to my reading experience. 6mo
esurient I got further in to this one the first time I tried reading it, and I remember being disappointed by lesser focus on Being the Food Taster than I had expected. 6mo
esurient Anyway, it's currently on sale. #pricedrop 6mo

readingjedi Totally agree with your comments. I finished the thing, it doesn't improve 😐 6mo
esurient @readingjedi Such a bummer. Tanya Huff did a short story once that involved poison, extravagant food, and assassination, and I remember that one fondly. I need to dig it out. 6mo

BookishMarginalia Yep, that looks pretty bad. 6mo
esurient @BookishMarginalia It's a sad feeling to nope out of a book, but I'm not sorry for it. 6mo

#pricedrop This one had a glowing review from SBTB, but the grassroots reviews are middling and I increasingly loathe first-person narrative. Maybe I'll try reading the sample.

esurient @readordierachel Yeah, I'm not clicking with the sample at all. 11mo

#pricedrop! I've heard some good buzz about this one -- it has an ace heroine! But it's also written in first-person POV, and YA isn't my jam. hmmm.

I legit laughed aloud at this. I guess... I'll have to add it to my TBR...

esurient And whoops, I accidentally one-clicked the buy button when trying to download a sample. Good thing it's on sale right now on Kindle! $2.99! #pricedrop (edited) 2y

Not That Fairytale: a short story
Michele Amitrani

I went from 'ooo, dark fairytale retelling' to 'well snap this is not for me' by page two.

Writing style is very YA, tight first-person, heavy D&D narrator influence ('I awaken in a dark forest. There is darkness to my right, and lighted shadows to my left. I move left.').

esurient Author's intro indicates it is unpolished fiction, available for free as practice. My readerly opinion finds it more like a first-draft writing exercise and frankly unsuitable for publication. I'd rather pay money for the polished story. (edited) 2y
esurient I know you get what you get with freebies, but I did not find this one readable. I am sorry, book. 2y
