Madeleine and Rogan are first cousins, best friends, twinned souls, each other’s first love. Even within their large, disorderly family—all descendants of a famous actress—their intensity and passion for theater sets them apart. It makes them a little dangerous. When they are cast in their school’s production of Twelfth Night, they are forced to face their separate talents and futures, and their future together. This masterful short novel, winner of the World Fantasy Award, is magic on paper.

"Madeline and Rogen are first cousins, best friends, twinned souls, each other's first love."

This is how the description started. I suppose I thought it was a young & innocent first love, but instead, it's just incestuous. Yeah, these Tierneys might as well be Lannister cousins. The writing wasn't bad & had a few good spots, but this short, YA book took a taboo topic and tried to make it acceptable. ??

This time last year, I was reading 'Illyria' after having read "Twelfth Night" (by Shakespeare.) I was under the mistaken impression that 'Illyria' was loosely based on the play. It totally wasn't; but that's not the reason I ultimately disliked EH's novel: The promised magic was just an odd bit in the story; the relationship came across sordid; and it felt less like a YA novel than a reminiscence of the author slightly dressed as fiction. #TBT

Lindy I was the only person in my YA book club who found this book unconvincing. I was disappointed because I like her other novels. 8y
