The Citadel It stands unconquered, the last great summit of the Alps. Only one man has ever dared to approach the top, and that man died in his pursuit. He was Josef Matt, Rudi Matt's father. At sixteen, Rudi is determined to pay tribute to the man he never knew, and complete the quest that claimed his father's life. And so, taking his father's red shirt as a flag, he heads off to face the earth's most challenging peak. But before Rudi can reach the top, he must pass through the forbidden Fortress, the gaping chasm in the high reaches of teh Citadel where his father met his end. Rudi has followed Josef's footsteps as far as they will take him. Now he must search deep within himself to find the strength for the final ascent to the summit -- to plant his banner in the sky. His father died while trying to climb Switzerland's greatest mountain -- the Citadel -- and young Rudi knows he must make the assault himself.

If I didn't have to read this book for work, I would have bailed on it. It was dated, unbelievable, and was dripping with after-school-special morals. Also the only female characters were a waitress and a hysterical mother that everyone lied to. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I got a box of materials in the mail for my teaching job this summer, and these are some of the books we'll be reading! Has anyone read these? What did you think? 🤓

thebluestocking Both Cricket and Henry were on the Battle of the Books list for this school year. I ended up reading Cricket. I thought it was just okay, but my kid liked it quite a lot. (I was bummed that of 10-12 characters only one minor character was a woman.) 5y
smilingshelves The Cricket in Times Square was always my first read aloud of the year to my fourth graders when I was teaching. They always loved it! 5y
ScientistSam I remember loving The Cricket as a kid but needless to say it's been awhile 😀 5y

Buechersuechtling You guys, maybe this is out of place because it‘s out of topic but it seems that you are the right bunch of people to ask. What is this teaching in summer all about❓ In the book I just finished which played in the U.S. the protagonist had to go to summer school. I figured it‘s for all those who failed the exams and otherwise would need to repeat a year. But if this is so where is the summer vacation for the teachers who give those lessons❓🤔 5y
Rachel.Rencher @Buechersuechtling Some regular school teachers can sign up to teach "summer school" where they get paid a little extra and help students catch up so they don't have to repeat a grade. Most teachers do take their summer vacation, though, unless they want to extra cash. I personally wouldn't want to deal with summer school because it's basically passing out packets and monitoring trouble children. What I'm doing this summer... 5y
Rachel.Rencher Is teaching at a reading institute where parents sign up their kids for a 5 week course to improve their reading skills, words per minute, things like that. Adults can also sign up for critical analysis classes where I teach them how to interpret and analyze nonfiction works. 🤓 5y
Buechersuechtling @Rachel.Rencher 🤗 Thanks a lot for the fast and detailed answer. If I recall from my English course correctly summer holiday in the U.S. is about three months so that five weeks of summer course don‘t seem to mess up the complete summer. Which maybe I would‘ve thought a cool thing as a student. 5y

Rudi, whose father died trying to climb a mountain, is obsessed with accomplishing what his dad could not, despite his mother's and his uncle's forbidding it.
This one was good, but would have been better with a bit less description of the actual climbing.
