A young girl's disappearance rocks a community and a family in this stirring examination of grief, faith, justice, and the atrocities of war from Joyce Carol Oates, "one of the great artistic forces of our time" (The Nation)Zeno Mayfield's daughter has disappeared into the night, gone missing in the wilds of the Adirondacks. But when the community of Carthage joins a father's frantic search for the girl, they discover the unlikeliest of suspectsa decorated Iraq War veteran with close ties to the Mayfield family. As grisly evidence mounts against the troubled war hero, the family must wrestle with the possibility of having lost a daughter forever.Carthage plunges us deep into the psyche of a wounded young corporal haunted by unspeakable acts of wartime aggression, while unraveling the story of a disaffected young girl whose exile from her family may have come long before her disappearance. Dark and riveting, Carthage is a powerful addition to the Joyce Carol Oates canon, one that explores the human capacity for violence, love, and forgiveness, and asks if it's ever truly possible to come home again.

I am a Joyce Carol Oates fan, even while not being a fan of everything she writes, for she is one of the most prolific authors ever, imho. This book is straight-up difficult—there were times I had to take a break from the emotional overload—shot through with philosophy, theology and issues of social justice. When a young woman disappears from a northern town in New York, the aftershocks are cataclysmic, ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont) for the one accused of causing her disappearance (death?) is a favorite son of the town, a returning (wounded and very much scarred and broken) Iraq war hero, and the fiancé of the missing woman‘s sister. There‘s a lot of meandering about in the minds of each character in this book, which perhaps makes it overly long; the story (while worth it) wore me out in so many different ways: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. ♥️ (edited) 5y

I hope this isn‘t a huge pain in the ass, but I will eventually have them all pictured on the bingo card. Again, my apologies! ♥️ (edited) 5y

I love creating drawings from how I see everything in a book. It's a memory for myself and I love the hobby

This is my first Joyce Carol Oates and I didn't like it as much as I was hoping to. I liked the story of a missing girl, a war veteran accused of killing her, and the families involved. I thought it was too drawn out and could have been more concise. Overall I'm giving it ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I tried to read her books years ago and just couldn't get into them... 😐 7y

Full of surprises and twists, but just TOO LONG. And despite twists, I never connected with characters.

In all fairness, this was the audiobook version that I am bailing on. The book may be better, but I just couldn't deal with how Puritan one of the young girls talked. Far too prim and proper and it threw me off. Couldn't get past it. Sorry, Ms. Oates

Orbeck33 Life is short. There are too many great books to stick with one you don't like! 9y
