Bailedbailed

I keep striking out on the books I pick for the #AToZReadingChallenge2021 mini challenges. August's prompt was an indie author, so I hunted down an indie audiobook on Hoopla and found this one. The writing style was so clunky (see the first sentence)... And I know this genre often fetishizes gay relationships, but there's literally a character who tells gay characters what she wants their sex life to be like and I had to bail on this one at 30%.

Kenyazero I was also not loving that one character's chapters were in first person and the other character's chapters were in third person. One final note: This is a small thing, but it also killed me when one of the readers pronounced yaoi as "yeaow"... Look up how to pronounce unfamiliar words before you record!) 3y
Kenyazero I realized that another thing I hated about this book was that it enforces cultural covering demands. I don't think that's what the author was intending, though. This book follows brothers who grew up in Japan and thus have Japanese mannerisms while living in the US. The narration frequently mentions them forgetting to not do Japanese things like say "ittekimasu" when leaving the house, implying that their Japanese way of doing things is wrong. 3y

I struck out again on my July mini challenge for #AToZReadingChallenge2021 and picked a book I totally hated 😏 I did finish this one, though!

I‘m so close to finished with the #AToZReadingChallenge2021! I‘m starting my X and Z books this month.

I didn't have high expectations for this book because the description made it sound really bad, and it was free, and I'm finding that many steamy books are not well written... But this one has proven more of a disappointment in the first 6% than expected. I'm reading it for a #AToZReadingChallenge2021 mini challenge to read a Christmas book in July and I might need to change books if it doesn't get better soon 🤭

Pickpick

I definitely only read this to fill the Book About A Nurse mini challenge for the #AToZReadingChallenge2021 to read a book about a nurse. It was a fun read, and gave some good characterization to history. I'm not sure why they recently reprinted this book. It is quite old and the language really reflects that. This is a kids book, but the wording and style is very dated. #History #Nonfiction #BookAboutANurse

I'm aiming to participate in 3 year-long reading challenges in 2021:
1, The #AtoZReadingChallenge2021 hosted by Crystal and Megan
2, The #ReadingWomenChallenge2021 from the Reading Women podcast
3, and my own, #LGBTQ2021 book bingo!

I'm looking forward to it and to seeing what everyone else is reading!
