Light Perpetual: A Novel | Francis Spufford

Mehso-so

London, November 1944, several people in a bombing among them five school kids. A book about what if that hadn‘t happened and we get the potential stories of Jo, Val, Alec, Ben and Vern. At times I forgot that they hadn‘t died in the first pages.

I have mixed feelings about this book.

Brimful Generally enjoyed it but the women were too passive. The rise of feminism greenham common women‘s participation in the work force all invisible. 3y
Ruthiella I loved Golden Hill by this author, but most readers I‘ve encountered don‘t like this new one...what do the Booker judges see in it, I wonder? 3y

This book. Don‘t let its size discourage you from reading it. Before page 60 I was pulled into the story and I loved every page.

In the present the big Hollywood star Hadley is playing Marian Graves in a movie. In the past we follow Marian Graves the pilot and her famous trip and a woman who didn‘t follow the rules.

AnneCecilie @squirrelbrain Interesting. I think I‘m getting close to reading half the list and so far I‘ve loved this one and A Town Called Solace. 3y
AnneCecilie @AmyG I think there‘s a lot of Littens reading the Booker Longlist at the moment. I know I wouldn‘t have read this if it hadn‘t made to the list 3y
AnneCecilie @Graywacke How do you find it? (edited) 3y
Graywacke @AnneCecilie i‘m enjoying it. I think most people like it more than I do, but I haven‘t minded listening. It has kept me interested and I think there are some really terrific parts. (I also have mild complaints 🙂) 3y

In the small town Solace, a 16 year girl is missing. We follow her younger sister, the old neighbour and the just moved in neighbour. I loved the different voices and the story

I‘m so happy this made it to the Booker Longlist, because I wouldn‘t have heard of either the book or the author otherwise

I liked this one but I seem to be in the minority.

One thing? I cannot imagine doing the audio. It‘s more stream-of-consciousness, and a distorted conscious for most of the book.
