Not forgettable! I‘m very surprised this held my attention given it revolves around the mermaid myth, but it did. The narration was terrific and I‘m sure made all the difference. 🧜🏾‍♀️

It could have used less sex and more plot so I‘d say it‘s a slight pick. Definitely evocative of the islands & culture.

Ruthiella I think ANY book is perfect to read on a rainy day, as long as the reader is comfortable and dry inside! 😃 ☔️ 4mo

I never thought I would find a children's book that used the magical realism style, but Medina pulls it off in this book! Probably best for stronger readers with good imaginations - the imagery of her language is enchanting.

August #BookSpinBingo! #Spin is also my choice for #Jamaica for #FoodandLit, so that's convenient.

This caught my attention because the Europa edition cover is beautiful IMO. That is not what I have here. But I am so interested in the mermaid myths that turn up in various cultures across the world. This one is lovely. And an audiobook read with a Caribbean accent? Yes, please!

I have been doing deep dives into eligible books the Women's Prize for Fiction might pick for 2024.

I was thinking about how there is often times a Caribbean novel that I have not heard of makes it's way onto the list, so I started seeking out books from there released since April 1, 2023 and I think if any I read about have a shot is it this one! The synopsis sounds just right for the Women's Prize both in form and theme.

Chelsea.Poole Lovely cover art on this one! 11mo

Beka reflects on the tumultuous past few months, beginning with her failure to pass the term, on her penchant for lying, the stories of “befo time” and political unrest, her great-gran‘s death and wake, a hurricane, and most troubling, the gulf widening between them as Troycie‘s inability to cope with ruinous events causes a breakdown. Beka‘s intelligence and contrariness see her (and the reader) through what could have been just a miserable tale.

Starting the year off a little slowly, only reading these two books. And I haven't finished anything recently.
