The first AH book I haven‘t loved, but I did like it. It feels more New Adult than Young Adult, I think, which wasn‘t my favorite. Mallory felt VERY young, which I guess makes sense, as she‘s a young woman forced very early into an adult role, and throughout the book she deals with the consequences of that. It was fine, but one of the few I don‘t see myself rereading. It was fun to read this while kiddo and hubby played endless rounds of chess.
A quick read owing to the fast paced nature of the book. You can't but help root for Beth Harmon.
I have been holding off watching the TV show until I read this book so onto the series next!
Honestly, this was so boring. It‘s not my typical genre and I feel like it was really hyped up, so maybe my expectations were too high, but this one just wasn‘t for me. I do really like the cover though. #hauntedshelf #hexesandcrows @Catsandbooks
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I always enjoy a good sports story, and this chess-centric romance definitely scratches that itch! There were some things I didn‘t love, mostly to do with the character of Mallory and her family, but overall this is a fun, quick, heartfelt read.
Probably the most confusing thing about this book is that it‘s being called a young adult novel, and it absolutely is not.
So it‘s a good book, one I would recommend, but not to younger readers.
A gripping short story that was hard to put down. Zweig uses a story within a story to frantically capture Dr.B‘s experience of a certain horror, using the chessboard to ramp up tension without distracting or slowing the pace. Well worth reading and interesting to continue the theme of obsession from the last book I read. 9/10
"Chess-players sketch their portraits in the motion of their pieces".
Beautifully put.

No one is more surprised than I am to learn that I hated this book. I liked the concept of a romance within competitive chess, but the MC Mallory is so idiotic that it pained me to listen. My eyeballs were going to roll back in my head for all the times I scoffed at her cluelessness. Every chapter she was newly confused as to why Nolan (who fell in love with her the first time they met for no apparent reason) was spending time with her/saving 👇
