#DisruptTexts

I don‘t post stuff like this usually but I will not be quiet & let a white woman go on a racist attack towards the WOC educator Lorena German over classic books. This shit is disgusting, & uncalled for.

This is the YA Author of the book I tagged. She has since deleted the tweet to save face but the damage is done.

I will not support this author she has since been removed from my TBR I thought others might want to know what she is like.

Sweetkokoro It has been a wild morning on booktwitter in the Classic Literature Book department, the amount of work white people will go through to defend old tired ass racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and ableist white writers is astounding. These old ass “classics” will not connect with my daughter who is Mixed, nor will they connect with children of color in general. Asking for a broader view of what literature is taught to our children isn‘t a bad thing. 3y
Sweetkokoro No one is saying that these “classic” literature books need to stop being taught all together, but what we do need is more Modern Classics in the classroom from more DIVERSE authors. 3y
BookmarkTavern Well said! I had to do some more research, but I was so excited to discover the #DisruptTexts project. I will be making sure I remove any of Ms. Cluess‘s books from my TBR list too. 3y

Sweetkokoro @ozma.of.oz Thank you. I also learned a lot about #DisruptTexts this morning as well and I am here for it! 3y
Sweetkokoro @ozma.of.oz unrelated but please tell me is that a Bulbasaur wearing a Christmas hat in your profile picture, because if it is my heart is so full, I love and adore Bulbasaur with all my heart. (The profile pictures are so tiny and grainy on here sometimes but I‘m like 99% sure that is what I think it is.) 3y
BookmarkTavern It is! It‘s also a holly plant Bulbasaur. This artist on Instagram made a series of different Bulbasaurs that I‘ve been using for my profile pics! 😁 Bulbasaur is my favorite. https://instagram.com/mcg.mark?igshid=18wwya9srr7f0 (edited) 3y

LibrarianRyan I agree I was watching this go down last night and way like what....?????? It's so rude. I there are a few classics I loved and was glad to read like Mocking Bird and Silas Marner, but most were pulling teeth and I am a reader. I can't imagine how much harder it is for those who don't like to read in general. And don't get me started on the horror that is HAWTHORN. He's My dickens to @trashcan's dickens. No Thank you!!! 3y
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan Yah I saw the end of the storm this morning and was just shocked. I got lucky in highschool and got to pick which classics I wanted to read and it made my experience with Classics easier to handle but not everyone got that experience. My daughter struggles with reading, if this stuff is still be forced down their throats by the time she gets to highschool she will not enjoy it at all. It‘s time to move on and bring in new voices! 3y
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro I went from an advanced HS to a backwater HS so I had read all the senior reading books my freshman year, so I got to do my own project, which was to read as many of the 100 most banned books (which at the time was mostly classics) and write a paper on why they were banned. But still. UGHHHHHHH 3y
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan that sounds horrible. My English teachers every year let everyone read the synopsis of each book & pick out which ones they wanted to read & do their reports/presentations on. (A lot of people were upset they didn‘t pick Lord of the Flies after I did my presentation in senior year). The year my sister got into highschool they took that away because kids don‘t know how to pick the “right classics” to read. 3y
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro what makes it right? I learned last week that some of the modern classics that I love and recommend to modern children are considered problematic so was a bit disappointed in that. There are some school asking to remove Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry and The Cay from reading lists. both books were pretty much the only place i say black characters in books in my child hood. Mildred Taylor (thunder)is Black, Taylor is not. 3y
Sweetkokoro @LibrarianRyan Honestly I don‘t know, the school refused to elaborate on it, so I take it as a way to just control kids & shove reading material down kids throats because “classic”. I had to Look both of those up as I have actually never heard of either books as they were never presented in any of my schooling. It‘s always disappointing when a book you think is good actually is harmful but that‘s why the literature we are taught should evolve. 3y
Branwen How awful! 😲😲😲 3y
