Finally finished! It was a tough ride. There were sections I loved and others I really struggled with. Joyce is undeniably talented, the chapter where he walks the reader through the entire history of language proves that. But his style isn‘t my favorite and I frequently felt lost in his ramblings. I‘m glad I read it and I‘m also glad it‘s done! #febbloom

BarbaraBB Congratulations. What an achievement 👍💕 6y
manifestsanity I listened to Portrait of the Artist recently. Thought an Irish narrator would bring it to life. Ditto: struggled. 6y
AvidReader25 @BarbaraBB Thanks! I‘ve been intimidated by it for more than a decade. 6y

AvidReader25 @manifestsanity I think the audio definitely helped and I read parts of it in print as well. Still, tough read! 6y
Faibka Congrats! 🎉 I‘m still struggling reading the printed version. What a book! Definitely one of the most difficult books I‘ve read but in my opinion so well worth it so far! 6y
AvidReader25 @Faibka Yes! I‘m putting together my thoughts in a final blog post. 6y

“Hold to the now, the here, through which all future plunges to the past.”

@Avidreader25 another lovely quote! I‘m really struggling with chapter 9

AvidReader25 I just finished it and I struggled with a lot of it! 6y

“He holds my follies hostage.”

I just loved this quote. Happy Sunday!

AvidReader25 I love that one! Sometimes you struggle through pages of his meandering words to stumble on things like that. 6y
Faibka @Avidreader25 lol, yes! It can be very unexpected and rewarding 6y

“His lids came down on the lower rims of his irides. Can‘t see it. If you imagine it‘s there you can almost see it. Can‘t see it.”

This is actually very sad now that I know that Joyce was almost blind and had to go through several eye operations. Having poor vision my self I can relate :(

I need a beer to get through this next chapter 😅 it‘s hard to read and reread a paragraph and still have no clue as to what he‘s talking about 😩 Cheers, life is a stream!

jveezer If you want to understand a little more at the cost of slowing down your reading a LOT more, you can get a copy of Don Gifford's Ulysses Annotated. But I wouldn't actually recommend it on your first reading if you are reading fir fun. 6y
Faibka @jveezer thank you! I actually did try reading it with Gifford‘s annotations but you are very right, it was taking forever and took away all the reading enjoyment so I decided to just go for it on my own and use the annotations for a later reread. I‘m actually really enjoying it but get stuck sometimes. I stumbled into Frank Delaney‘s podcast so I‘m listening to it to accompany my readings :) 6y
Faibka @jveezer with “sometimes” I mean a lot of times! Lol 6y
jveezer It took me forever with the annotations too. I definitely think saving that for a second read is better. I think it also helps not to be "forced" to read it in a class. It's difficult enough without the pressure of a deadline, test, or grade. 6y

What a great start of the day! 😊

@Avidreader25 I highly recommend this podcast to accompany Ulysses, very insightful and Mr. Delaney is such a joy to listen to.

AvidReader25 This is fantastic! I‘ll look it up now. I‘ll share it on Instagram and my blog as well. 6y
Faibka @Avidreader25 Great! I think you‘ll like it, it explains a lot about the text in a fun way. Sadly, Mr. Delaney passed away when he was about a 3rd through the book. But he left 7 years worth of episodes, a remarkable achievement! 6y
AvidReader25 @Faibka That‘s truly amazing. I‘ve read some of Delaney‘s work and so I can‘t wait to listen! 6y

Just read a reference to The Woman in White in Ulysses. I love it when books reference other books. #FebBloom

Faibka Yes! Me too, and this book has plenty 6y

Well it was a choice between doing laundry or reading more of Ulysses so I went for Ulysses 😆 Made it to page 100! Phew this book is tough, but I love a challenge 🤨 plus discovering all those golden nuggets of beautiful imagery and brilliant language molding makes it worth it.
