I just went down such a rabbit hole after learning that Seanan McGuire 1) found her agent through writing Buffy fanfic, & 2) genuinely despises the ending of the series.

NOW. I have plenty of complaints about Buffy. But the ending was never one of them. Any other superfans want to weigh in?

I may have bought a book just to read her essay about it.

Note: Don‘t worry! I bought it used. Because, ew, Joss Whedon.

willaful I was a big fan at one time and was pretty happy with the ending. I'm curious now too. 3d
monalyisha @willaful The most I can find is a Goodreads quote, “The mythology warped and twisted back along itself until Buffy Summers, the girl who once railed against the unfairness of being Chosen, looked at a squadron of girls who were just like she‘d been and took away their right to Choose.” 3d
willaful Ah, yes I can understand that point of view. It's presented as entirely a positive in the show, and you can argue that Buffy's pov has changed with age and that she's giving them something she mostly didn't have -- each other. 2d

AnneCecilie I liked that ending, but I had a completely different understanding off it. I took it to mean that every girl had the inner strength to be a slayer and stand up for herself 2d
TheLudicReader I didn‘t hate the ending of Buffy. (My complaint has always been how they jumped the shark with Spike.) Curious to know what the author‘s fanfic handle was as I wrote a lot of fanfic back in the day and was pretty well connected to fandom. 2d
monalyisha @willaful @AnneCecilie Yes! I viewed it as such a hopeful and beautiful example of the redistribution of power (and its decentralization)! Context is incredibly important. Community vs. isolation means so much. I didn‘t get the impression that every new Slayer would be forced into servitude, either. I bet McGuire feels even more passionately about her interpretation (which she‘s entitled to!) after the allegations against Joss came to light. 2d
monalyisha @TheLudicReader Unfortunately, she removed her name from all of it after people started critiquing it like they would her published writing. I‘m not sure that info‘s findable anymore. I wouldn‘t recognize your handle (I was too young and my memory‘s too shoddy)…but I wonder if I read any of your stuff back in the day! I know McGuire specifically wrote Buffy/Faith fanfic. 2d
TheLudicReader @monalyisha I don‘t think fic writers should be ashamed of what they wrote. It‘s great practice and I wrote stuff I am still really proud of. It sucks that Whedon tainted Buffy‘s legacy, but this is one instance where I separate art from artist. There were a lot of other people involved in the Buffyverse, too. Where did you read your fanfic when you read it? 2d
monalyisha @TheLudicReader I truly have no idea. I was about 13. To me, it was all just “the internet.” 😅 I know I was a big fan of the Angel/Willow “ours is a forbidden love” storyline. To be clear, this pairing horrifies me now. 🙈 (As do many aspects of the show if I look at them too closely.) At the time, my thinking went no further than, “Angel is hot...and I am like Willow.” Reason enough for me! (edited) 2d
TheLudicReader @monalyisha Angel is hot is the reason I started watching that show in the first place. 🤣 The next ten years I was full on fandom! 1d
monalyisha @TheLudicReader Recapping the moment that he returned from Hell (in the nude), my bff‘s older sister‘s bff commented, “He was glistenin‘ like a Greek God!” That moment is forever seared into my brain. 😂 (edited) 1d

Another Firefly book, they‘ve been perfect audiobooks for this busy season. This one takes the crew to a frozen planet that‘s home to a prison and search of a doctor to save Inara‘s life. Simon, Zoe, Mal and Jayne are thrown together while River, Kaylee, and Wash go toe-to-toe with an Alliance cruiser.

I've loved Firefly for years but hadn‘t read the books. I was pleasantly surprised that it maintained the tone of the show. They managed to capture the characters' ticks & personalities. It picks up where the show ends, but before the movie takes place. Mal finds himself in trouble & Zoey is left in charge. I loved learning more about Mal & Shepherd's history before we meet them. I'll read more of the series & maybe re-watch the show again.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Loved the show!!! Not sure if I saw the film. 2mo
AvidReader25 @JanuarieTimewalker13 the movie came out a few years after the show was canceled. It was excellent and explained so many things that were left unanswered. 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 Ohhh, I‘ll have to look into it. I was such a fan I purchased Malcolm‘s medallion necklace on Amazon…it‘s so cute but it was pretty goofy for a 50 yo to buy that…I was OOC on AMZN back in the day. Lol 2mo

JanuarieTimewalker13 Actually it was a dog tag set, I found it. Lol. I only kept one medallion and the box. 2mo
AvidReader25 @JanuarieTimewalker13 I love that! It was such a travesty that the show was canceled. 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 Yes, I greatly enjoyed it!! Had a crush on Malcolm. Lol 2mo

Firefly - Coup de Grce | Una McCormack

? I ordinarily love everything Una McCormack does, but this was disappointing. I don't know if maybe I let the narration (Foster's was great; Lawrence's was grating) sully my enjoyment of the story, or if the story was just meh, but whatever it was I didn't love it. And does Shepherd Book always call young women "little girl" and I've just never noticed? Cause that was damn annoying. ? Glad I didn't waste an audible credit on this one.

AvidReader25 Are there other Firefly novels you‘ve liked? I loved the show, but haven‘t read the books. 1y
Traci1 @AvidReader25 yes! This was book 8. I loved (gave 5 stars to) books 1,2, 5, and 6. The others were ok, although I didn't care for book 4. You can read them in any order, but Big Damn Hero is book one and is fantastic. I think book 2, The Magnificent Nine, was my favorite. 1y
AvidReader25 Oh perfect! I‘ll start with Big Damn Hero. Thank you! 1y

This puts the romp in space romp with that signature Firefly western bent. What I expected and not half bad for the pulp and spin-off that it is!

⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was an ok backstory of Shepherd Book, but it was a bit odd. It was told in a backwards fashion, and there wasn't a lot of meat to the story. The art was decent. Overall, it was a very short not bad way to pass a little time, but it's not something I'd seek out.

Book 1/2 finished for #20in4 (easy finish at 59 pages)
@Andrew65

KathyWheeler I hate that this is only okay. I love Shepherd Book and want a story about him to be really good. (edited) 2y
Traci1 @KathyWheeler it was really just too short. You'd have 2-4 pages and then it'd say 2 years earlier, then another 2 pages and 6 years earlier, and on like that. You got a teeny view of several periods of time in his life. I just wanted more to it, I guess. 2y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 2y
