This is an unflinching oral history featuring the good and bad aspects these women encountered in the spotlight in a segregated America. These women were often still in their teens, unable to make their own career choices, and found themselves working hard without seeing any real benefit. This book also gives us an understanding of the songwriting process, the recording sessions, and the relentless touring that would take a toll on these groups.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ronnie Spector lived one hell of a life. She chased her dreams, saw those dreams come true, and fought her way through the hell of Phil Spector. Her voice shines through this memoir; it‘s like a good friend telling you their journey.

This jumped onto my TBR after it was mentioned on #MyFavoriteMurder (a recent listen but an old episode)…so sad that we lost Ronnie in January 2022. My first exposure to The Ronettes was the opening credits of Dirty Dancing, with which 5-year-old me was *obsessed* (though clearly so much nuance of the plot flew right over my head). 💜 Rest easy, Ronnie. 💜

This is book is like reading a battered copy of Hello! magazine whilst watching trashy shows on ITV2, the perfect morning commute read. I'm also listening to a classic 80's girl group, Bananarama. I had the pictured album on cassette as a kid, Love in the First Degree is my favourite. Thank you Spotify, love the tunes!

Freespirit I loved Bananarama❤️ (edited) 5y
JaneyWaneyB @Freespirit 80's tunes are the best. I might indulge myself with a bit of Rick Astley this morning 😃 5y
