A story that epitomizes complicated parent/child relationships. The illustrations made this graphic memoir work for me, otherwise it would have been just okay. (Not a huge fan of memoir.)

Throughout I really wanted the perspectives of the other family members to compare it with Alison‘s. Alas, that‘s not going to happen. 😏

A steamboat captain saves an injured mermaid, but her situation isn't as innocent as it seems, and the boat's owner's promiscuity is hiding a complex secret.
What a wasted set-up!
Aside from this beautiful imprint under the dust jacket, I didn't like much about this book. The art was mostly bad, the main character looked like a muppet, and the story kinda sucked until around Page 300, but then it totally flubbed the ending. Very disappointing.

TieDyeDude Sorry to ruin the cover, but I had to show you the main character. Seriously, how do you settle on that design? And yes, he looks just like that 75% of his panels. No one else looks like a muppet, BTW. The book was also way too horny for my liking. 1d
Clare-Dragonfly The art style reminds me of Over the Garden Wall. But if no one else looks like that… 🤨 1d
lauraisntwilder My husband read this a long time ago and I remember thinking the cover was gorgeous. It has such a great set up! I love the idea of a freshwater mermaid. But I never bothered to read it. I guess if he'd thought it was good, he'd have suggested I read it, too? 1d
TieDyeDude @Clare-Dragonfly Maybe I would have been more forgiving if I thought of Wirt 😋 19h
TieDyeDude @lauraisntwilder There were some really interesting aspects of the mythology, it just didn't come together well, IMO. 19h

I adore this book! The art struck me immediately and was what got me to check it out. A group of friends has a curious mission to fulfill, that involves the mysterious destination of the moon lanterns dropped into the river each year on the Autumn Equinox. This graphic novel is full of stunning illustrations—I found myself taking pictures of several pages. There is humor and a lot of science, but this book is all about friendship, discovery,⬇️

Bookwormjillk I read this every year at the Autumn Equinox 2d
JenniferEgnor the ways in which we navigate grief, and the sense of self. I think my favorite scene was the glowworms in the star farm cave. This book really allows your imagination to soar, and though it is written for young readers, it is a story all ages can enjoy. There is supposed to be a screen adaptation, with Peter Dinklage as the voice of the talking bear…I can‘t wait! 2d
JenniferEgnor @Bookwormjillk excellent tradition 💙 2d

This was such a cute and sweet manga!

The story is very interesting to say the least. Essentially, the main character, Nasa, gets saved by a mysterious girl named Tsukasa. He immediately asks her out and she says yes on the condition that he marries her. This volume primarily explores the very early days of their marriage.

4 ⭐This Illinois reads for 2025 is a short graphic novel. It‘s been categorized three through five but I think it would work for readers in first and second grade as well. Duck and his friends are just hanging out for the summer until they meet the cool cat. The cool cat is too cool, and it leaves an uneasy feeling in duck. Can duck conquer this feeling or will the friends realize that some people brag to feel better about themselves.

Lunar New Year Love Story, by Gene Luen Yang (illustrated byLeUyen Pham) (2024)

Premise: A Vietnamese-American teenager is pulled in many directions after she learns of a family curse that means they are all destined to fail at love.

Review: This was a bit of a mixed bag for me, largely because there were a few too many things stuffed in this particular bag for my liking. Cont.

Mattsbookaday For me the best parts were the specificity of the cultural representation — particularly in the similarities and differences among East Asian Lunar New Year celebrations and in the mixture of indigenous and Christian themes in Vietnamese communities — and the moral of the story, which was not what one might expect from this kind of novel. But it did feel a bit over-stuffed.
