Mehso-so

Jane Austen wrote & published most of her works during the Regency Period (1811-1820) & this book gives us a snapshot of the type of food that those who were quite well off would have been eating in this period. With recipes taken from the time, alongside quotations & short sections on different aspects of Georgian dining, this is a pleasant accompaniment to Austen's novels.

OutsmartYourShelf I enjoyed leafing through this one evening although it left me feeling a bit peckish. I quite liked the sound of syllabub (basically whipped cream flavoured with sherry or wine & fruit), & Bath buns, but being vegetarian, I wasn't so enamoured of the 'sweetbreads' or 'ox cheeks' recipes. Yuck! 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf One thing that really stood out to me though was how late into the evening/night they would eat - sometimes 1am. Seems like a recipe for indigestion & acid reflux to me. It's a light, fun read but I'm not sure that I will be attempting any of the recipes. 3⭐

Sally Urwin is a 4‘ 10” former corporate marketer who became a farmer‘s wife when she married Steve a sheep farmer based in Northumberland) and started writing a blog recounting her experiences. This entertaining book that reinforces how difficult farming is both physically and emotionally (made worse by the perilous economics within the industry) is based on some of Urwin‘s blog entries and tracks a year of living on the farm.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

★★★★★

A travel memoir, history of Christian faith in Britain, and travel guide, all in one. It caused me to fondly reflect on my own travels to historic Christian sites in England and Scotland.

'Yet after a brief tour of [Lindisfarne Castle], I encounter a familiar paradox: a tour of a fortress tires me, while a visit to a roofless priory somehow fortifies. Over the centuries, paths of pilgrims have tended to lead away from castles, not toward them.'

For September‘s #TitlesandTunes #dramaqueen My Drama Queens are Queen Bees. And therefore their song is Honey Honey by Abba 😂 Which may be a bit light for a drama filled play list!

Henry George (Gino) Walker should be recognized among the great arctic explorers, this author asserts, if only he'd survived a tragic accident at 25. A mediocre student with a quest for adventure, it turned out he was an excellent and likable leader of expeditions into the heart of #Greenland and established a manned station in Greenland for a year to track weather trends for potential flights to shorten the trip from the USA to Europe. Most of ⬇

Texreader the book focuses on the fierce conditions of the expeditions, for the men manning the station, and efforts to relieve them in somewhat regular intervals--all close to impossible. This was an interesting study of some of the last true explorers (in early 1930s), and especially of an individual, Gino, with unique talents and mindset. #readingtheAmericas2023 @librarybelle @barbarabb 8mo
