Pickpick

Missed the post office yesterday before leaving town, so this will be sent to @rachelm first thing in the morning!

Wholly different from what I was expecting, this short novel proved to be an important work in its own right. Its strength was the use of surrealism to convey the truths & nuances of present-day issues on the topic of immigration; bridging cultures & languages. The translator's note was very informative! 4⭐️s #LMPBC #Round7 #GroupI

Carolyn11215 Sounds amazing! Can‘t wait to read it! 7d
lele1432 @Carolyn11215 I hope you enjoy it! It took some getting used to, and as the translator notes at the end, it's non-standard and colloquial. And just a heads up, there are no quotations used. But there came a point when everything "clicked" and I was like, okay, I get what the author's doing with this and the themes he's conveying. Can't wait to hear your thoughts! 7d
rachelm Exciting! I‘ll keep my eyes open for it! 7d

A little late to the party, but I'm excited about this #readathon! Here are some of my weekend #TBR choices. Currently 2 hrs in and enjoying the tagged collection of ethereal short stories! Also have my #LMPBC choices I may get through for #Round7 #GroupI and #GroupC, and my next #NFNov pick. Need to break out my snacks! 🤗

#MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyofOne #24B4Monday

MrBook Wooo-weeee, you are full up! 😆👏🏻🙌🏻👍🏻👍🏻 1mo
lele1432 @MrBook haha yep it's the perfect weekend for a readathon! 😂 1mo

lele1432 @jb72 I've put off reading it since it came out! I have an unrepentant sweet toothe lol but I think he gives some valuable information in it. I'll listen to it as I eat my sugary snacks.😂 1mo
Andrew65 Sugar is such a dangerous thing as I have found out recently. 1mo
lele1432 @Andrew65 I believe it! It's going to be such a hard habit for me to kick, but I'm not getting any younger and I at least need to reduce my intake. 😩 1mo
Andrew65 @lele1432 I‘m having to do the same at the moment. July 19th Last date I ate a cake. 😳 (edited) 1mo
lele1432 @Andrew65 wow! Congrats on that!! That's gotta take some willpower lol 1mo
Andrew65 @lele1432 Yes, now trying to reduce my carbohydrates. Necessity is the mother of invention. Those carbohydrates and my liver weren‘t liking each other. 1mo
lele1432 @Andrew65 shoot, I'm sure that's hard but you're right at the end of the day what matters most is your health! No matter how enticing those carbs may be! 😩 1mo
Andrew65 @lele1432 Get really frustrated when food shopping in the supermarket! But as you say health most important! 1mo
lele1432 @Andrew65 I can relate to that! I was making myself sick and destroying my gut for a while after developing a gluten allergy because I didn't want to give up my pastas, breads, and cakes! 😩 Thankfully these days they have more gluten-free options available. 1mo
Clwojick 😃1 pt. And great time so far! Keep it up! 🙌 1mo
lele1432 @Clwojick thanks! 😊 1mo

Okay#LMPBC #Round7 #GroupI today was crazy so I'm just now able to post my choices. I'll tag them in the comments as well. 4 contemporary and 2 classics. I'm kind of leaning towards the tagged book, Signs Preceding the End of the World, but let me know what you all prefer!

lele1432 Mexican literature. A young woman must traverse the Mexican-US border to find her brother. (edited) 2mo
lele1432 German literature. I was first introduced to Stefan Zweig through another #NYRB title I read for the #NYRBBookClub, Chess Story. I absolutely loved it. My only 5 star read so far this year. So I've been wanting to try another one of his works. 2mo
lele1432 Hebrew literature. This one is a mystery concerning a hit-and-run. 2mo
See All 10 Comments
lele1432 Another Spanish translation. We decided not to do The Shape of Ruins due to length, but I actually have a copy of this shorter title by the same author. It's intriguing as it deals with a political cartoonist who could ruin politicians' careers with his art. 2mo
lele1432 Classic Indian literature. Described as three stories of forbidden love. Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Asian Nobel Laureate according to Amazon. He was also a poet. 2mo
lele1432 I've been interested in this title for a while now, but it borders on Argentinian folklore/gothic horror, so probably not for the faint of heart. 2mo
Carolyn11215 I‘d love to read Signs Preceding...but would be happy with any of these! 2mo
lele1432 @Carolyn11215 okay great! If @rachelm and @aeeklund don't object, I'll go with that one! (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB I bought The Post Office Girl Too because of the #NYRBBookClub! 2mo
lele1432 @BarbaraBB I also want Beware of Pity lol. 😊 He was an excellent author. (edited) 2mo

#groupI #lmpbc Ruled our two so this is what I‘ve got left? @rachelm @aeeklund @lele1432 Preference?

rachelm I like the description of drive your plow 2mo
aeeklund Drive Your Plow has been on my list a long time. I was actually considering her book of short stories for my pick initially. 2mo
Carolyn11215 Have hard cover of Drive your Plow in my Amazon shopping cart so I can pull trigger once @lele1432 weighs in! :) 2mo
lele1432 Drive Your Plow sounds great! 🤗 2mo

lele1432 Ooohh these are great choices!! 😧 I've been excited about Freshwater all year. But I've also heard great things about The Shape of Ruins, although it's a tad long. The other three I just added to my TBR because they sound fantastic lol! I'm sorry I am of no help right now..maybe in the morning I'll have more of a preference. 😂 2mo
aeeklund I‘ve read Freshwater and it‘s amazing. I don‘t believe it‘s in translation, though? 2mo
rachelm I haven‘t read any! If any of them are scary I would not prefer that, but otherwise I‘m up for anything! 2mo
Carolyn11215 Okay, Freshwater is out because I didn‘t realize it was written in English.
Description of The Shape of Ruins: A sweeping tale of conspiracy theories, assassinations, and twisted obsessions -- the much anticipated masterpiece from Juan Gabriel Vásquez. Is that too scary @rachelm ? Lele1432 do you know what the page count is for that book? You mentioned it was a tad long and I haven‘t found # of pages In my searches yet.
2mo
rachelm Not too scary for my taste! 2mo
lele1432 According to Goodreads it's 528. But it's up to you all! I'm not tied to 400 page count. 2mo
Carolyn11215 I don‘t want to violate the page count rule so if we rule that and Freshwater out, do we have preference amongst other 3? Maybe I‘ll do new post to make this easier... 2mo

Whew! I am SO glad I saw this in time! I've been stalking the hashtag to make sure I didn't miss out like I did Round 6 lol. These fill up fast! Literary Fic was full, but it worked out perfectly b/c I slid into the last spot for #GroupC AND #GroupI (Classics & Int'l Translation) which will stretch me but are right up my alley! There are still some groups available! #LMPBC #Round7 https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/5080444aead2ca0ff2-l...

TheAromaofBooks I'm in Group C, too!! I've never participated before so I'm excited. 2mo
lele1432 @TheAromaofBooks yay!! I'm glad you commented lol I couldn't find your handle! I think you're going to enjoy it!This is just my second round. I'm super excited about classics! Our group is full so I'm going to start selecting possibilities for my pick. 😊 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I just got the email with everyone's details, so now I can find the people. :-D I'm leaning towards a children's classic since those are the ones I'm most familiar with. Do you have a book in mind yet? (edited) 2mo
lele1432 @TheAromaofBooks oh I need to check my email!! A children's classic sounds like a great choice! I'm looking through some New York Review Book Classics and Penguin Classics and was going to try to get a consensus on what everyone wanted to read out of my choices. I think I may throw Revolutionary Road into the mix too. 2mo

Kdgordon88 I‘m in. Sounds good! 6mo
Crazeedi @Kdgordon88 I have 2 more that should be here next week, but I got this today, and thought maybe a good one. Not too long, like many if my books are, and a neat premise... 6mo
megnews I just read this one in March. 6mo

Crazeedi @megnews we may have a problem since it seems we like reading the same books! Or maybe that's a good thing.... 6mo
megnews @Crazeedi I think it‘s a good thing! It might just be a challenge to find something neither of us have read! 6mo
Crazeedi @megnews lol, I have one coming in mail, I don't think any of you have read, but I'll wait till I get to see if I like. The other 2 I ordered are 400 plus(stupid me didn't ck page count🙄) I have to look at my shelves again too. Like I said I tend to purchase thicker books, lol 6mo
ReadingisMyPassion I enjoyed this book. Her next book THE BEANTOWN GIRLS was even better. 6mo
Crazeedi @ReadingisMyPassion thank you! I must move that one up on my tbr! 6mo

Hey #LMPBC #GroupI. Above is my “short list”. The long one had like 55 items. I‘d thought I‘d wait to see what everyone else has chosen and then pick one to even out the selections so we are not too heavy on one type of Mg book.

I‘ll tag all the books below. Please let me know what ones you have already read and I will take them off the list.

LibrarianRyan His only MG series I haven‘t read and I loved them all. (edited) 10mo
LibrarianRyan Sequel due out this spring/summer (edited) 10mo

LibrarianRyan This just won The Newbery Award. 10mo
LibrarianRyan I loved Refugee 10mo
LibrarianRyan Book 1 although I seem to keep tagging book 5. I do mean book 1. (edited) 10mo
LibrarianRyan There is just something about us Evil Librarians. 😈😈😈 10mo
LibrarianRyan Don‘t let the size fool you. This is shorter than it appears. It‘s similar to The Invention of Hugo cabaret in that over half the story is told in full page illustrations. 10mo
Johanna414 These are some great selections! What‘s going with Jennifer Nielsen? I hadn‘t heard about this 10mo
LibrarianRyan @Johanna414 thanks for the catch. I got my Jennifer‘s wrong. It was Armentrout. Not Nielsen. 10mo
Johanna414 @LibrarianRyan lol that makes so much more sense 10mo
WanderingBookaneer I‘ve read a handful, but I‘d be ok rereading. 10mo
MeganAnn Lots of good choices here! The only one my son has read so far is Bad Unicorn. 10mo
MeganAnn We have a few of these one our shelves but haven‘t read them yet so it‘d be just as great to read them with the group. I‘ll ask my son if he has a favorite off the list tonight when we get home. 10mo
MeganAnn @LibrarianRyan we looked at your list and Axton said his top two choices would be The School for Good & Evil and Resistance. But really he wants to read almost all of them so I think choosing something to round out the selections and get a variety is a great idea! 10mo
Readergrrl Hi, Everyone! I‘ve just returned home after a long day and I‘m just reading all your comments now. There are so many books I‘d like to read, but one that‘s at the top of my list is The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Karen Barnhill. Does that interest anyone? 10mo
LibrarianRyan @Readergrrl I‘m all for it. 10mo

Guys, this is my first time and I‘m so excited!!!! 😊👏😍📚Five memoirs I‘ve been meaning to read at some point in my life. They all look good to me! Any preferences?
#lmpbc #round4 #groupI

jessinikkip A friend of mine read the one about reading Lolita and said it was good. I have not already read any of them and they all look good to me, honestly 13mo
Readergrrl These are great! I‘ve read Lolita, Long Way Gone, and 3 Cups. I‘m not familiar with the other two. But, please, pick what you like; I‘m always happy for a reread! 13mo
CouronneDhiver You can‘t go wrong with any of those choices! 13mo
