The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry
The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: A Novel | Gabrielle Zevin
Funny, tender, and moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry reminds us all exactly why we read and why we love.* A. J. Fikrys life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over--and see everything anew. This novel has humor, romance, a touch of suspense, but most of all love--love of books and bookish people and, really, all of humanity in its imperfect glory. Eowyn Ivey, author of The Snow Child Marvelously optimistic about the future of books and bookstores and the people who love both. The Washington Post You wont want it to end. Family Circle A natural for book groups. Richmond Times-Dispatch A readers paradise of the first order. The Buffalo News A fun, page-turning delight. Minneapolis Star Tribune Captures the joy of connecting people and books . . . Irresistible. Booklist A wonderful, moving, endearing story of redemption and transformation that will sing in your heart for a very, very long time. Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain Readers who delighted in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, and Letters from Skye will be equally captivated by this novel. *Library Journal, starred review

I was really pleased with the horror that I had to choose from, honourable mentions were The Elementals, Kill Creek, N0S4A2. Other top reads were Where the Heart Is, Bastard out of Carolina, Frozen in Time, and Deep (James Nestor). I excluded anything not published in the date range and counter Oryx and Crake because it represents the whole series.

Mynameisacolour I really liked My Best Friends Exorcism too! Really looking forward to The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires : A Novel coming out in April! 1mo
Cinfhen I recently read and really loved / although it broke my heart 💔👉🏾 1mo
Reagan @Cinfhen I would not recommend that book to the faint of heart. Loved it though and I am a huge fan of hers. The Child Finder and The Butterfly Girl are also very good. 1mo
Reagan @Mynameisacolour It was such a sweet surprise, gross but such a great story about friendship. My favourite of his books so far! Looking forward to the next one and will definitely buy right away! 1mo
Cinfhen I have the child finder on my shelf / hoping to read it next year 1mo

Oh my goodness I loved this book SO MUCH!! Pervasive through the entire book is a love of reading, writing and people who love reading and writing. The characters are beautifully written. The story draws the reader in. I‘m about to start re-reading it because I didn‘t want it to end. Currently debating how many copies to buy as Christmas gifts...

The new quarter of Book Riot's MyTBR always sneaks up on me. To be able to leave my bibliologist some feedback, I grabbed this one on audiobook. I didn't love the narrator, and probably would have bailed on print, but I'm glad I kept listening. Finished in 1 work day - this is definitely a booklover's book. I laughed and cried and thoroughly enjoyed the literary references and A.J.'s rants. A nice, lighter read.

I found this charming and pleasantly emotional without being cheesy and sappily sentimental. I liked the tone that briskly moved through tragedy, acknowledging without wallowing. There were some lovely quotable bits about books and relationships and life. The middle slumped a little bit for me, but then it picked back up. Overall, a good read with a strong affection for books.

Addison_Reads I just finished this one too. Great review. ☺ 5mo

I loved this book. 💚 I really thought the sentimentality of it would come across a bit cheesy, but it doesn't. Maya and AJ are wonderful characters and watching them grow together was heartwarming. There are so many book references and book quotes that I found myself making notes on books to find once I finished.

I finished listening to this audiobook yesterday and I'm so mixed on how I feel. The book was both inspirational and slightly depressing, both happy and sad, one might even say tragic at times. I can't say the ending was bad or sad, maybe, like life often is, it was exactly what it was supposed to be despite our expectations or wants. I'm glad I finally read / listened to it but I think I'm still processing.

A true book lover‘s book; the character‘s storylines all intertwine and revolve around a bookstore. Well-loved books are frequently referenced throughout the story and each chapter begins with a letter written about a certain work special to the main character. It touches on both love and loss in relationships and families. A quick yet emotional read!

P.S. I have been in a HUGE reading funk lately. I don‘t know what‘s going on with me! 😳🆘

What a compelling story and a must for any book lover (each chapter is the title of a book or short story and they frequently reference classics in this story. Plus the two main characters are in the book selling business).

It felt a little bit like a Hallmark movie with a Lifetime edge (this was a book more focused on romantic relationships than I though it would be as well as some darkish family secrets).

I‘m listening to the audiobook, even though the narrator is annoying. The story is good enough to deal with it.

It‘s definitely spring in Austin! Here‘s the view of the city from the South West. See the kayakers in the upper left of the frame? They‘re in bikinis. At around 72, it‘s not warm enough for me to dress like that, but Sietje and I did have a nice walk by the lake after work. A mile and a half @kaye 😊. 🚶🏼‍♀️🐶

AJ Fikry‘s life is a mess. He spends his days in his failing bookstore and his nights mourning his late wife. Everything changes when a baby is left in his bookstore with a note asking him to care for her.

Enjoyable read, but a bit Hallmark movie-ish. The characters are not as developed as I would have liked, but I still cried.

I thought this was a decent read! Certainly not as heavy as some other books I‘ve read recently but you might find yourself with a few tears by the end.

AJ Fikry thinks he will live out his life alone as a bookkeeper after the recent tragic death of his wife... until a baby is left in the middle of his shop.
