#Riotgrams #Day19 #IReadThisTooYoung

While the content of this book was certainly beyond my maturity level at age 11 when I first read it, the power of the McCourt‘s writing has stayed with me for nearly two decades. This is the actual book my older brother gave me back then, I even wrote my name inside the front cover in my 5th grade cursive! I‘m guessing he hadn‘t read the book himself...

I was 10 years old the 1st time I read this & I only understood about 1/2 of what I was reading. It was such a transformative experience for me, though, & so much of what I look for in literature originated with that early experience reading this book.

I wonder how many readers out there also owe a lot of their love of reading and taste in books to an early experience with a book they weren‘t quite ready for yet.

BooknerdsLife Awww don‘t think I‘d love Jane Eyre as much when I was 10yrs old! You‘re a very mature reader! 👍🏼🤗 I only read books like Tom Sawyer or Oliver Twist (YA edition of course) when I was that age 😅🙈 5y
twohectobooks @BooknerdsLife Jane has an “in” for young readers, which is that she‘s also young at the beginning of the book. I dunno how mature I actually was, because I continued reading a lot of Sweet Valley Twins and trash like that with a bit of LM Montgomery mixed in after reading this. 5y

If I had thought to keep my father‘s books, this would have been one - it was abuzz for years when I was a kid. One evening when my dad was out, I did a conceal and carry to my room to pull my first all nighter where #IReadThisTooYoung before getting caught with my contraband. The next day my ever-livin-lovin‘ father was at-a-loss and a bit albeit secretly, impressed. .

Suet624 Love this story. 5y
marleed @Suet624 I was 11 or 12 when I read this and it scared the beejeebers out of me. The real challenge was not the all-nighter I discovered. It was trying to behave like I was not impacted by the story! 5y
Crazeedi Great story 5y

Suet624 @marleed I can imagine!!! 5y
marleed @Crazeedi @Suet624 I wish I could say I leaned my lesson on age inappropriate books. But nooo. I just learned to hide my contraband better. I followed this book up with Helter Skeltor! 5y
Suet624 No way!!! 😂😂😂 5y
marleed @Suet624 Haha! Way! And funny thing, as an adult I‘ve never read a horror story! 5y
Suet624 @marleed I went to the theatre and watched the Exorcist on my due date. I had no idea what the movie was about - I was in love and he wanted to see it. I spent a lot of time with my eyes closed. And my daughter waited 3 weeks to be born. 🤷🏻‍♀️🥴 5y
Crazeedi @Suet624 that's hilarious!! 5y
Crazeedi @marleed brave girl!! 5y
marleed @Suet624 I can‘t imagine watching that movie at a full term pregnancy. That‘s love for Baby Daddy! 5y
Reggie I am a fan of horror and could not finish Helter Skelter as an adult. I started having nightmares where Manson would be trying to kill my brother and me. Love your story. Lol 5y
marleed @Reggie Boy I get that! I remember an interview of Charles Manson when I was an adult - Maybe Barbara Walters. I couldn‘t watch. I just couldn‘t let my mind go back into his world. 5y
