This is such a brilliant book. The themes of injustice, revenge, and family are all woven together in such a wonderful way. The characters are lovable and real. I couldn‘t stop once I‘d started.

I have been on this train!!! 😂🤣😂 It‘s so disorienting to get off a train in the middle of the night, in the middle of a strange place. As I was reading the interviews in the back of the book, I discovered that Erdrich also got hepatitis in the same small town where my mother attended college. This is what I love so much about local authors. Their stories just as easily could be yours. 💙💙💙

I wasn‘t sure if she‘d made up St. Luke‘s Hospital. Everything up here is Sanford or Essentia, but sure enough, it‘s a Sanford hospital now. 💙💙💙

What a GREAT detail!!! After 20 years away, this is one of the first things we put in the shopping cart our first grocery shopping trip back in MN. These are THE BEST potato chips. Their pretzels are the best, too. Both are in our kitchen right now.

Taking this audiobook/paperback combo for a ride. I love Erdrich, so I‘m excited for this one. Plus, I‘m finally adding another book to #IndigenousVoices2021 #LouiseErdrich #TheRoundHouse

In honour of the fact that the independence we celebrate today was not and is not independence for all, and that the land we celebrate on was stollen land, I‘m starting this book today. It was actually between this one and another one, but with this one being about ethics and character, I felt like it fit with other books I‘m reading right now.

GingerAntics I fully meant to read an indigenous writer every month this year, but I over extended myself a bit and I haven‘t done that, but I‘m getting back up in the horse now. 3y

This is such a lovely book. It‘s part memoir, but completely about our relationship to the land as human beings. It has a wonderful focus on how we don‘t have to be a negative influence on the land we live on and survive because of. It‘s not a win-lost proposition. It comes from both a scientific and an indigenous perspective, which unsurprisingly aren‘t always two different perspectives. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I especially enjoyed the parts about the importance of keeping languages alive to keep cultures alive, as well as the parts about gratitude. People love to do “a month of gratitude” in November, but I‘ve never seen anyone doing that show any appropriation for the land they live on or the food they eat (which comes from the land). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics I would love to be able to take one of Dr. Kimmerer‘s classes. I enjoyed her reading on the audiobook, and I found myself stopping to take notes and marking things to go back and reread in the text later just to take it all in. She has not only points out the symbiotic relationship between people and the land that many westerners miss or never learned about, but also also that everything changes when nature is a who and not a what. 3y
Traci1 Ooh, this sounds fantastic. 3y
GingerAntics @Traci1 it was a lovely read. Some of the stories of community and love made me tear up. Heads up on the one when she drops her younger daughter (she has two) at college. That one had me sobbing. Such a sweet book, and wonderful if you‘re a nature lover. 3y

This is so beautifully comforting. I feel this every time life gets crazy. I just want to go out, away from cars and life, into nature and peace. It‘s wonderful.

This book was a lovely look at how indigenous peoples have survived since Europeans stormed into their lives. This book covers in much more depth what is covered fairly quickly in Turtle Island. The final chapter of this book dovetails nicely with the final chapter of Turtle Island as well. I feel like these two books could be combined to give the broader picture in one volume, but I also under the choice to make shorter, child friendly books.
