Pickpick

I didn‘t enjoy this as much as other History of Middle-Earth books we‘ve read, and some sections required real effort to read. Yet, overall it is a pick because I truly enjoyed the final history of LotR and the Drowning of Anadune. The other sections give me a great appreciation for the time, effort, and thought put into all of Tolkien‘s creative process. “Delight lay in the creation itself . . .”

JazzFeathers I totally agree with this review. Although l think that with a more focused mind, l could get a lot more even from the harder section. One day... 4y
Daisey @JazzFeathers I also hope to read it again someday. I think just a second chance to absorb as well as possibly less distraction while reading would help me get more from it as well. 4y

Getting closer! #24B4Monday
I finished The Notion Club Paprrs for #LOTRHistory, and never have I been so relieved to be done reading something by Tolkien. I feel slightly traitorous and guilty... but still relieved.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I don‘t blame you there, you have to read when the reading time is good! 4y

OK... I love Tolkien with all my heart, but I'm currently feeling very thankful that he abandoned the Notion Club Papers in favor of finishing LOTR. Some small bits are kind of interesting, but for the most part, I am just really not enjoying this 😴

#YearofTolkien #LOTRHistory

Daisey I‘m not far, but I understand what you mean. There are little bits that really speak to me and other sections where I‘m struggling to stay engaged. 4y
wordslinger42 @Daisey Yes! I feel so distracted while I read, like I end up checking Litsy more often than I turn a page 😅 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I completely agree, these were much more challenging for me to read and stay engaged, where the LOTR‘s chapters flew by. 4y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Glad I'm not alone! I'll be very happy when we're done with this section! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 Same here! It definitely feels more of a great group brainstorming what-of session, less of a great read, in my opinion anyway...so great if you were there, not so great as a story to just read....and I‘m not sure all the footnotes help either, this might be one of the few cases where they make it more confusing sometimes. 4y

And so it's over. After seven months of journey (we started on 5 April and finished on 27 October) The History of the Lord of the Rings is over 😭
#LOTRHistory

It was such an incredible, enriching, emotional, insightful journey. And all the more fantastic thanks to my awesome #FellowshipOfTolkien travel buddies.

Now let me curle up in a corner and mourne for a little while 😢
Fortunatly, we'll go on another #MiddleEarth adventure soon 😊

Loved reading this unused epilogue to The Lord of the Rings, the way Tolkien first envisioned the book to end.
Yes, the final version is more powerful, and it's not hard to see why Tolkien went with it in the end.

It's also not hard to see Tolkien himself surrounded by his own children in his studio, telling them stories. I understand why he was fondo of that epilogue.

Daisey I completely agree! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved that version... it‘s so reflective of Tolkien and so very true to Sam too. 4y

I started Part Two tonight, and although I‘m still not quite sure what these Notion Club Papers are going to entail, I‘m completely intrigued to continue.

#FellowshipofTolkien #YearsofTolkien

Daisey So, are we finished with the #LotRHistory hashtag or do we keep it for the remainder of this book? Thoughts? 4y
JazzFeathers I finish The Lord of the Rings yesterday night and can't wait to start the Notion Club Paper, just because l have no idea what they are. I may even catch up in the long weekend. Personally, l'd go for a new hashtag. Maybe one that feels the reminder of the History of Middle-Earth. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa You‘re right, we‘ve finish #LOTRHistory. Maybe #NotionPapers for this section? 4y

Daisey @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have been trying to think of something to finish the whole book, but I‘m at a loss. I‘m good with keeping the #FellowshipofTolkien from here on and then just whatever else fits the current section. #NotionClub or #NotionPapers sounds good to me. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Well we are a fellowship, might as well start a club too! #NotionClub 4y

And l haven't even read the entire chapter 😭

wordslinger42 I felt the same! Like I was just as emotional reading about the creation of the chapter as I am when I read the finished chapter itself 😅 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa It gets me every time, and now apparently...in every form. 4y

Oh, wow!! I knew the ending was to be very different because of all my fellow Tolkien readers' comments, but I mean... no Saruman, Frodo a chieftain of hobbits!

I find it interesting that the parts concerning the Shire seem to have gone through some of the most important changes, as if Tolkien himself didn't really trust them to tell an epic story at first.
This is a far simpler ending than the one we know.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was a shocked that Frodo was suddenly a warrior in the first version...when he wasn‘t exactly a sword fighter in the rest of the book up until that point. Sam however, fighting for home as fiercely as he did for Frodo would have seemed less shocking to me. 4y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa True. But l suppose that's in part true for Frodo as well. He suffered a lot and it was all for his homeland. And then he comes home and find out that the Evil he thought he's overcome has taken roots in his own home. I can see why that first direction. We're probably shocked because we know what it morphed into. 4y
